Default Progress photos, itty bitty boat.

Well, I finally started my next boatbuilding project. It's a Jolly Rocker by Jordan Wood Boats, for my grandson. I'm hoping to have it done in time for Christmas (I'm a very slow builder, so I better get moving!). Here's a picture from their web site of the finished boat:

It's a good design, and the plans are well done, but I just can't resist messing with a good thing. So I'm converting the slab sides to lapstrake construction, and adding a few details so that the boat "sort of" resembles my Penobscot 14. Here's the progress so far:

I used some battens to line out the planks, it was more difficult than I thought it would be, but I think I've got it right. We'll find out when I make some "pattern planks" to test it for sure.

The sculling notch and the trim piece aren't shown on the plans, but I added them to mimic the Penobscot, and I think they look good.

Local materials cost $125. Time spent in the shop - a few weeks. Look on our daughter-in-law's face Christmas morning - priceless.

It could be that the purpose of your life is only to serve as a warning to others....

    Default All planked

Just hung the last plank this evening. I've been told that this is typically referred to as the "whiskey plank," in honor of the celebration which normally follows this milestone. But in light of the small size of the boat and it's future skipper (he'll be a year old next month), maybe I should call this the "apple juice plank?"

Na, you rub whiskey on his gums when he's teething to kill the pain, right?
