    Default A tight fit

The entrance of Vlieland harbor is tight just, 16 meters wide and square to the main currents. Add some southwesterly winds at BFT force 8 and it can become quite a challenge, especially for a traditional sailing vessel.

And another one, filmed from the other side of the entrance, SW BFT 9 or 10, wind against current.

Interesting bowsprit. Pivots up when not under sail?
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

Yes most Dutch traditional ships have a pivoting bowsprit, on my own ship it's a simple bolt through pivot.

Wow! The possibility for disaster seems high. Those skippers must have a great deal of confidence as well as experience. Well done.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

Sometimes some small disasters occur (almost every skipper kissed the Vlieland poles at least once in his/her career)

These ships usually have a beam of 4,8 till 6 meters, if you look closely you can see that the beam fits around 2,5 till 3 times between the jetties.
