Any available paint stripper should work fine for conventional, oil-based varnishes. Polyurethanes or two-part types may need methylene chloride-containing strippers, which can be hard to find after last year.

Then there’s always Methyl Ethyl Ketone, but that should be used as a last resort & with proper safety protocols as it’s pretty nasty stuff.

Agreed. Cleaning up lot of boat parts and this methods works very well. Shouldn't hurt the stainless.

Sometimes a sharp knife will remove varnish without damage.

If the piece is not mounted, other mechanical means such as buffing work, too.

So one has to ask it, so it might as well be me.

Why do you varnish your stainless fittings?

Sorry I had to do it, it has been that kind of a day.

If the fittings are off the boat and will fit in a pot, boiling them for a half an hour or so (maybe with washing powder or similar) will loosen most finishings enough that all they need is a good scrub.

    YMMV

I was thinking the fittings might have some varnish on them from a sloppy previous owner. Not intentionally varnished. At least I hope so.

Just bought the boat. It wasnít me said the boy stealing the pie. The boat is a Pepper 15 from 1976. It was the prototype for a gaff rigged 15 footer with a club jib and stay sail jib. I guess one of her previous owners was a little sloppy when they varnished the deck. The anchor hosepipe, deck eyes etc. are all splashed with varnish.
