    Nice!

But growing up on the Ohio River -- on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, they're called "tugboats". Never mind that they don't tug nuttin'.

Beat me to it. That's a great book--one of my favorites from McPhee.

I almost posted a photo of that boat on the I-40 bridge thread. If not pushing other barges, it almost always has the barge in the photo in front to reduce the bow wave.

I grew up along the Mississippi River. My parents had friends that were towboat captains, I had friends whose parents owned towboat companies with multiple boats and repair facilities with dry docks for working on towboats and barges. My grandfather worked on an US Army Corp of Engineers dredge, Another friend of the family worked on USACOE mat laying boats. I never heard anyone call them a push boat or tug boat.

    MV Mississippi

    Propulsion: 3 Caterpillar 3606 diesels (6276 hp. total) turning 3 5-blade 93-inch-diameter (2,400 mm) propellers

It is the largest, but far from the most powerful.

Sprague, built at Dubuque, Iowa's Iowa Iron Works in 1901 by Captain Peter Sprague for the Monongahela River Consolidated Coal and Coke Company, was the world's largest steam powered sternwheeler towboat. She was nicknamed Big Mama, and was capable of pushing 56 coal barges at once. In 1907, Sprague set a world's all-time record for towing: 60 barges of coal, weighing 67,307 tons, covering an area of 6+1⁄2 acres, and measuring 925 feet (282 m) by 312 feet (95 m). She was decommissioned as a towboat in 1948.

After decommissioning, Sprague became a museum on the Vicksburg, Mississippi, waterfront. For many years the long-running melodrama Gold in the Hills was performed there.

The boat burned in Vicksburg on 15 April 1974, and as of 2019, pieces still remain in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Hey, I only report what I see. Take it up with the shipyards that build 'em, boat brokers who sell 'em, and professional mariner's trade magazines that report on 'em, if you don't like those folks calling them 'pushboats'.

Another book that I think is worth reading. A good bit on the early attempts at controlling the river and a lot on the politics in my hometown in the 1920s.

I had friends whose fathers owned companies that built them. They weren't called that there. There is at least one smaller one under construction in my hometown right now.

I don't know when this image was taken, but there was one being built at this location the last time that I rode my bike on the levee trail.

    Not pushboats, not tugboats.

When I go to godforsaken, tortured, twisted and forlorn Nova Scotia, and I see some poor, faded, ersatz imitation of a towboat, I will do you the courtesy of calling it a 'pushboat'.
I am not refusing to listen, Oz; just I am 'splainin' how I came to call them pushboats, is all.

I am talking about towboats on the Mississippi too, Oz, but just by a different name, is all. As I do not live on the Mighty Mississippi, I have to rely on the information that I can gather from sources available to me. When I see that kind of boat referred to as a "pushboat" by the Mississippi and Louisiana shipyards that build 'em, and the Gulf Region commercial boat brokers who sell 'em. well, I kinda feel comforted that they may just be correct. But now that I have been shown The Light by the Great and Powerful Oz, I shall attempt to be more circumspect in the future. Of course, there is always that niggling little phrase I read in one of the publications I referenced that said, "...also called towboats", which leads me to believe that maybe - just maybe - it is one of those objects that have different names in different places, kinda like, "soda", "pop", and "soft drink", y'know?

I see by your comments that you have never visited Nova Scotia, because you would not have mistaken it for "godforsaken, tortured, twisted and forlorn"; but for the unspoiled Eden-on-Earth that it is. Come on up sometime, and I'll show you what you have been missing all your life. Just leave your guns at home, OK?

The OP shows her in St. Paul, at Lambert’s Landing. And yes, they’re called towboats at this end of the Mississippi.

She’s big (241’) but not as big as the American Queen (418’) which also comes to call in my home port.

"Towboat" is all I've heard them called around here.

I don't have any guns either. I do, however, have a whole slew of rubberbands in a cubby at the end of the hall. And I know how to make a surprisingly functional blowgun from a pipe, a playing card, a bit of tape, and a sharpened nail.

I'm not surprised Canada still hasn't announced that they will let me into the country this summer.

I can throw a 20 oz. Estwing and stick the claw through a 1/2" plywood panel from 15 feet.

A list of some of the towboats that were built by Brent Towing Company in my hometown.

I used to be friends with Little Jessie, I know Jessica Brent and her sisters Eden and Bronwynne. The other sisters had towboats named for them, but Brent Towing might not have built them. Carole Brent was their mother. Alison was probably named for Alison Hines that I went to school with, they were somehow related. I went to school with Jill Wasson who was probably related to Joy Wasson.

A video filmed in my hometown with the Bronwynne Brent. The old bridge in the video is gone and has been replaced.

Parts of the video including Morgan was filmed at Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale. I've spent a number of hours there also. Morgan is a part owner of Ground Zero, but has never been there when I have been.

Oz, I truly believe that if someone came up to you and gave you a hundred-dollar bill, you would cuss them out for it.

For what it is worth, if I feel that you are deserving of a compliment, I'm a-gonna give it to you. I don't care if it does pizz you off, 'cuz that seems to be your natural state.

I'll check back later to see it this post pizzed you off, too.

I really did not expect for you to grasp the fact that your 'compliment' is nothing more than a thinly-veiled, patronizing insult, any more than you can grasp that these are towboats.
