How wonderful... I'm particularly taken with Johanna from 1903.

Enjoyed that. Got a kick out of that "in-your-face" pilothouse in the META. That SUDERELBE would make a fine livaboard cruiser for me.

    What a wonderful little film.

Somewhat oddly perhaps I was especially struck by seeing the bulk carrier Bleichen.

Having Googled it I found out that she was saved from being scrapped and has been subject to a rolling restoration programme since 2007.

Whilst she perhaps lacks the romance of the other vessels, she's a great example of how cargo was moved by sea in the post war, pre-containerised period. Together with aircraft such as the Boeing 707, she is a type of vessel that facilitated the early days of integrated global trade as we know it today.

Whether the convoluted global supply chains that have resulted are a good thing or not is perhaps open to question, and is ultimately something only history will define. However, this ship is very much a part of our generation's history and the legacy we therefore leave to the world.

I am absolutely in awe of the foresight and financial commitment that must have been behind the decison to preserve her.

Well done the Hamburgers (not the globalised patty with a side of fries type...).

There’s more... Hamburg is the only maritime city that has done, and does, a proper job of taking care of its maritime heritage:
