    Default Ethanol Fuel in 2-stroke outboards. In SI engines.

    I think this article on the use of e85 fuel in a two-stroke outboard is pretty neat; I don't think there's a long term update by the author, but intriguing nonetheless.
    What are all of your takes on using neat ethanol &/o e85 in a 2-stroke? In a 4-stroke? Especially insight on technical challenges, personal anecdotes, that time you ran a model t on moon-shine, etc.

    Discussions on economic/environmental/political implications of ethanol vs. petro-gasoline are tangential to what I care about, so I've also created this thread so that anyone who really wants to speak to that aspect may easily do so.

    Not 2-stroke, but 4 stroke. This Thai study is really interesting, and has good starting values for re-jetting. Their focus was on keeping the conversion as simple as possible, so apart from advancing ignition timing, they didn't do anything with CR. As a hobby project, doesn't seem too difficult to overbore the cylinder, or machine the head on a little engine to increase compression ratio, since neat ethanol has an AKI on 99.

    SI,. System international, metres, kilogrammes and seconds....

    CR, Honda Motocross bikes

    AKI, who knows

    Please God no more unexplained abbreviations.

    P.S. overboring a cylinder is non-trivial, and decidedly not a game for unsupervised beginners.

    SI = spark ignition
    CR = compression ratio
    AKI = anti-knock ratio
    UJ = unexplained jargon

    By the way, do you mean attempting the machining oneself, or the dimensions of the bore? That's something I would imagine/guess you'd want to send out to a machine shop.

    The machining is relatively straightforward - finding a new piston of the appropriate dimensions is a whole nuther can of worms - simple details like the angle at which the rings are pinned so as not to get trapped in any of the ports can turn a ten minute job into a month's worth of headache.
