Default idea for a double hatch on the cabin roof of the cargo

    Hello everybody,

I'm looking for some ideas to improve my design and make sure it is possible to build and avoid leaks.

I'm aware that there is a serious problem at this stage and I can accept; there is no solution !

Something that could be possible is that the front hatch slides over the second one having a dam (the front being able to go over it thanks to the twin notches..

I will try a design to visualized it.

Hopefully someone here have seen something like that before. Thank you

Make a single sliding hatch. Then it is much easier to make waterproof. Not immersion proof, but still, that design is hopeless.

Look up the hatch system on Merit 25s. They have a 2 piece, overlapping system with a dam as you mentioned. I'm sure there are others. It's probably not suitable for serious offshore (one replaced the hatch system before a Pac-Cup) but it keeps most of the water out.

    One of these perhaps...?

With a bit of ingenuity it should be possible to work out a way of being able to lift the top off if you wanted 'cargo hatch' access

Alternatively perhaps something like this on a Bavaria 41 (sorry for the poor quality photo), but hinge them the other way around so they fold flat onto the deck and then do something clever with a removable central beam?

Both would be a bit complicated to get 100% watertight if you wanted a fully open aperture, but it should be achievable.

Nest the fwd hatch into the larger after hatch and have them both open by sliding aft.
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

I'd just use a lift off single for loading cargo. Why make it hard on yourself?

That sounds reasonable. Here's an example photo off a pilot cutter.
