Default Splash, Click: Westport Skifff meets Minnesota ice

Recently finished and launched this Westport Skiff. Plans were obtained from Doug Hylan and Associates but also available from Woodenboat Magazine. I stretched the build from 11 to 14 feet maintaining the designed beam. It will spend it's life in the creek associated wetland below my home in southern Minnesota and provide a platform for exercise and amateur photography so I kept the finishes subtle and easy to maintain. I no longer hunt waterfowl but I may also use it to introduce my grandson to the sport. It was a cold April morning and skim ice had formed overnight but a perfect day for a row and a few photographs.

Launched a ways up the road instead of dragging it down the steep bluff where a navigable culvert provides access to a couple additional miles of creek downstream.

Here parked below my house on the hill above the wetland.

Beautiful! Looks like a lot of fun to be had. Post some of those wildlife pictures if you get a chance - I'd love to see them.

The day slowly warmed and provided some great waterfowl viewing as the northward migration is in full swing.

    Very nice!

A great boat for a great purpose!

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

I built one of these skiffs over the winter of 2016/17. Also built to a simple finish as it's used as a dinghy for my big boat and is kept at the dinghy dock in my local harbor which is primarily a commercial harbor so think lots of abuse at the dock! I put a layer of 'glass on the outside to provide some abrasion resistance. BTW, it's really a fantastic rowing boat even with an other adult on the aft thwart. The very strong aft rocker keeps the stern from dragging quite nicely.

Looks like it was one of those especially rewarding days that you won't soon forget. Nice job and I'm happy for you and inspired to get mine finished.

Bruce, great job and wonderful pictures !! I like the 'work boat' finish. In the early 20's, I lived in Southeast Minnesota, near Rochester - without getting too specific, is this any where near there ?? (nice area in background of those pictures)

Thanks Rick. Just a ways south of the twin cities in Scott County. The rolling farmland interspersed with small lakes and wetlands is not too unike around Rochester.

That is a good looking skiff. I would be interested in any photos of the build you have. Congrats

Sorry not a lot of documentation but a very simple construction of two sides of scarfed plywood with stringers attached wrapped around two temporary forms then the stem transom and flat bottom attached. Finished with knees at ransom, bow deck, gunnels and simple keel. Here are some of my few photos:

Agreed Scrib, it does row nicely. Haven't had a passenger yet but soon. Yours like a great and originally intended use for a skiff like this. Named after it's type origin in Westport Massachusetts and thereabouts.

Haha. April can be a cruel month in Minnesota. 84 degrees just a couple days after the launch and now snow and 30 knots of wind yesterday!
