Give me a couple of years. Perhaps something nice and simple like a skin-on-frame.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

A bit of a heartbreak today as I prepared to touch up the waterline on the transom.
I put painter's tape over the varnished transom and, not satisfied with how it lay, pulled it back up to re-position it. However, some flakes of varnish came up with it. I guess I didn't properly sand between coats at that bottom edge and the varnish did not adhere. Varnish is sound elsewhere on the transom.
I tried to feather it out, but sanded through the stain.
Long story short, the area looked botched up no matter what I did so I'm taking the transom down to wood again and starting over. Already removed the varnish with heat gun and scraper. Will finish wooding tomorrow.
Lesson learned. Make sure you sand properly between coats!
It will set me back a few days, but it's not the end of the world.

Still disheartening though. What are you using for varnish Rich?

I started off with Total Boat Gleam varnish, but it's thin watery stuff and wasn't giving a really deep gloss. After five or 6 coats of that I put on two coats of Petitt Flagship, which I have used for years.
At first, I thought the problem might be that the two varnishes were incompatible, but I tested other areas before stripping it off but didn't find that flaking anywhere else on the transom.
I still think I didn't sand well enough right down by the waterline between coats.
Whatever, it will get re-stained today, followed by many coats of Flagship.

    Too bad!

But... thanks for sharing your experience.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

Rich, you have had an interesting year. Lets see, your thumb, the bow shed, now the transom and I think there was one other...

As I've stated before, I like to show the good along with the occasional bad. Best that folks see my mistakes so they can avoid them.

Yesterday saw two mistakes, one on the boat and another on some shelving I'm building for my daughter. Nothing that can't be fixed but it is a reminder that I am but a mere mortal.

I’ve used Epifanes Wood Finish Gloss which allows multiple coats without sanding in between. Then finished with 2-3 coats of regular Epifanes varnish with sanding. So far, no problems.... but my boat is stored inside.

The engine gets mounted next Wednesday and the boat will officially be complete.
As for a name, I believe I've got one.
It takes a while to come up with a name. You just have to wait for it to appear.

One year ago, we were blessed with our first grandchild and we went down to Virginia last weekend to celebrate her first birthday. While there, we took a long walk in a local park. The Bluebells were in full bloom and this picture was the inspiration I was looking for to name the boat.
    "BLUEBELL".
The boat, while being blue, will now have an everlasting relationship to our granddaughter.

Sorry for the flip-flopped image, but I took the picture with my phone and no amount of this computer cave-man banging his head against the wall will rotate it.

Bluebell (especially with the backstory) is a great name!

Good choice of a name for the boat and I bet all the family will remember why.Of course it means you will have to keep this one forever,or somebody in the family will need to maintain the attachment.

Delightful. Its a great name and a great story to go with it.

That little girl's mother was just a kid when I built Ugly Green Boat and she caught many a bluegill sitting on the deck. I'm now getting pressure to not sell the old boat because of sentimental value.

timo, thanks for flipping the picture. Sure wish I knew how.
