Default Lighthouse - at least you don't have to mow the lawn...

Þrídrangaviti lighthouse, Westman Islands, off the coast of southern Iceland.

Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

    Stunning!
It appears that access today is solely by helicopter, but the light was built in 1939 when helicopter design was still in its infancy, so building the light was quite an achievement. Here's some info..

That pad is awfully close to the house. Not much margin for error in any direction.

There is quite a bit of foreshortening in the photograph.

How much of the rock pillar has been lost due to corrosion since it has been built?

    My guess is zero.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

Being the lighthouse keeper would have been a miserable job

You'd be isolated from the pandemic. And only the little bit at the top needs to be painted, unlike most lighthouses.

Not sure I agree. I'd probably enjoy living there, given adequate provisions, a good internet connection, and regular deliveries. And, you know, an appropriate companion.

What are you doing about it?

It's really amazing to think of things man has made.

Interesting, thanks. I had thought the building was prefabbed and dropped into place in the modern era. With no heliowhirlycopter, I can only imagine, in those rapidly rising, falling, and swirling seas, setting fixed climbing lines, climbing up, hauling up building materials of small liftable loads from a boat precariously parked alongside the pillar, I don't know how, doing some building, and either camping overnight onsite or rappelling back down, go home, repeat as necessary until finished.

EDIT: Oh, now I see the other view, the pillar has a lot more depth/length than that photo shows. Perhaps they were able to build a "road" as they say, an incline instead of ascending all by ropes. But still incredibly tricky for a boat dropping off the building materials. A lot of fenders and have the crane ready, do it quick.

I work at height, you get used to it. But those are also Icelanders, they are by definition, a different and crazy people.
