This song floored me on the way home from the beer store. Goddamit . . . .

And as some of you know, this became a theme for me as my wife lost her battle with cancer and remains relevant as my mom disintegrates.

I liked the Imelda May song, Curtis. Quite different from her usual rock-a-billy stuff which I also like.
I've read your posts, but wasn't really sure what was going on. I wish you well.

Thanks, Fred. Her name is vaguely familiar but I don't think I've heard her stuff before. High drama, for sure.

I posted that Joni Mitchell song just before the thread appeared that she's in a coma. Didn't like her songs at first, because they seemed too girly-swirly. But she grew on me.

This was the first song that really fetched me.

    Atta Boy!

I was pretty sure you wouldn't find the bottom of that magnum but figured you at least want to fire off one of those Torpedoes. Good restraint there.

Restraint? That's when you wait 'til your birthday to open your presents. Or something like that.

Thanks guys. I guess I haven't said an awful lot about mom's condition 'cause it's been hard to get my head around, much less type about.

Mom and I have had our rough spots but our relationship has been pretty close overall. She's had alzheimers for a few years and lately dementia has set in pretty hard. Oddly, once she decided that the whole family was out to get her, take all her money, steal her house . . . I'm the son she still trusts for "straight answers". So my role has become transportation secretary, cook, pot washer, liaison to reality, ambassador between two different universes it seems, and keeping the record (somewhat) in line.

I'm not alone in this though. Younger sis sees to her medical and personal needs, doctor visits and such, while my older brother is handling the legal, financial end of things from a remote location. So we've divvied up the duties according to our individual strengths and, in my rational moments, I'm grateful for the lot of them right now.

I've been going/needing to start a thread on the topic and tap into the collective bilge mind but, between keeping the cats herded and soaking my head in the pond, time has been rather precious lately. I'll get to it soon though because there's no better place that I know of for advice on navigating small craft in heavy seas, IMO.

No wisdom to offer, Curtis, but I feel for you in what seems like a tough situation.

One of our longtime neighbors had to go to a care place because she couldn't keep it together living at home. Deb works in town and visits her regularly, takes her out for Mexican food, etc. When the leaves green up we're going to bring her out for a walk along the river, which she really misses. The sad thing is she won't remember it the next day.

You're quite welcome, Bobby. For all the time you've devoted to scraping me off the ceiling and making sure my mooring lines were snug when the winds piped up, it was the least I could do, pal. I hope your day is a good one.

Thanks, Chip. Steep as the learning curve is with this sort of thing I've learned enough so far to know that the disease (if that's the right term) affects each individual differently and it's surprising the little things she'll remember. Mom's core personality traits have bubbled to the surface and, in her case, she focuses on the things that pissed her off, regardless of whether it happened yesterday or seven decades ago.

I've had some success through fixing her meals, to the point she can rattle off the last three or four things I've made and rave about it, and it's all been things she used to feed us when we were young and dependent on her cooking. Yet it all seems brand new to her.

These things are never easy. Sorry about your mom and I'll look forward to input like yours when I start a thread about alzheimers, indeed.

Yes, we get the same questions on a daily loop and I've been urging everyone to just tell her the truth. She can still spot discrepancies and is zeroing in any she may find, as she always did, whether they're valid differences or not. So my efforts have leaned towards refraining from just telling her what she wants or would like to hear to keep her sated . . . and all of us staying consistent.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you tell your mum when she asked if she could re-marry? That any of us should be so lucky at an advanced age is an inspiration.

Red stayed in bed this morning, I think he knows it's going to be a long day so he's resting up for it.

Dang, that's quite the sampler pack. I might have to get Red to take me with him.

He just crawled out a couple minutes ago, sat in the living room staring at the wall for a few seconds then came over and curled up in his basket.
