  • New Forum administrator

I'm hoping that the management of WoodenBoat will introduce us to the new administrator of this Forum.
Scot Bell did an awesome job, and we'd love to meet his replacement.
Will there be one administrator, or will it be a team effort by management?

    Great question.

It needs sorting out. Three threads now have spam attacks, and the black triangle does not work.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

True dat. But it makes reporting spam so much more difficult.

Mashing the black triangle actually goes to that wbfadmin@ email acct., so it's still easy-peasy to report spam.

                  Re: New Forum administrator

Unfortunately, until there is an active administrator who has the requisite permissions and vBulletin knowledge to address the issue, the spammers are going to be an inconvenience. The current version of software this site is running on is already out of date and needs an update. There are also a number of plugins for the forum, where for instance a new user's first post must be approved, as well as other enhancements. Unfortunately, these require an active, engaged administrator.

Either path has no garuntee you'll get some action for your effort, or a reply for that matter.

Earlier today I was trying to post a reply, had trouble getting on (server's busy, come back later) then once I GOT on had a reply composed. Went to add a couple images & got a 'veil of tears' I couldn't get past. Like a thin, white screen I could still see through over the whole page.

I'm thinking there's stuff going on 'behind the curtain' affecting forum performance. Won't be surprised if it disappears for awhile either if there's some changes in store The Management isn't quite ready to tell us about....

Just a guess, but a likely culprit would be spammers trying to run an exploit. Until the forum software is updated and spammers dealt with, they'll continue to flock here.

Well, it's good to know that there is at least someone home.
I just wish they would pop in and say hello.

                          Re: New Forum administrator

There was a thread about this topic a year or 2 ago. At that time the board was running the freeware version of the software and MySql that were already several years out of date. God knows what version and flavor of unix the OS is. It is probably running the same version. It’s amazing the board is still actually more or less functions and the spammers haven’t overrun the system.

It could be worse. Big banks are still running Cobol for critical systems. OMG!

                              Greetings, folks--
I'm Matt Murphy, editor of WoodenBoat. We (WoodenBoat) are currently working on an upgrade to the Forum, and aiming to 1) improve the user experience, with easier image uploads and graphics; 2) employ better spam blockers; and 3) improve functionality on mobile-devices. To quell any concerns: We do not anticipate the Forum being down for any appreciable length of time, or at all. I'm currently the interim moderator as we work through this transition, and I'll keep you apprised when we're poised to make the upgrade--which may be several weeks from now.
