Painting ribs with ABS slurry to prevent wet rot?
Toying with this idea to paint new ribs with ABS slurry (parts in the bilge only). Good or bad idea?Tags: None -

Welcome aboard!
I would use well tested coatings, or none at all on a critical part like frames. I'm sure you'll get other opinions, we have lots of them here. -

Not the best. Red lead paint is good. If you feel like using a toxic bottom paint, use something that does not poison your cabin air, like a cheap copper type paint.Comment

What is ABS? Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene is a thermoplastic polymer used for injection molding applications. It has low cost production & ease of use.
"ABS slurry" is ABS plastic dissolved in acetone. Here's a recipe (20g ABS per 50ml acetone):
This guide will show you how a few simple mixtures of ABS and acetone will be a helpful new staple in your 3D printing toolbox.
Basically a thicker version of this:

Where do people come up with these ideas? Reminds me of the guy that slathered his Egg Harbor with tubes of roofing goo.Comment

Re: Painting ribs with ABS slurry to prevent wet rot?
Please correct me if I am wrong, but fungi that live in damp wood cause wet rot. Preventing the timber from getting damp would be the typical course of action. Water in the bilge and poor ventilation are my problems, so I know what to do. Additionally, I am replacing most of the ribs as the fungi have been very busy in the bilge area. Apart from the typical treatments such as CPE and Red Oxide Primer, I would like to waterproof the rib parts that live in the bilge, as I may not be able to waterproof the hull. The boat is a classic clinker built in 1963 with maintenance issues. I acquired her two months ago.Comment

Use borax, in the form of Timbore, Scot's polar exploration ship Endeavour is now pickled in borax. It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Re: Painting ribs with ABS slurry to prevent wet rot?
With an all wood boat I'd be reluctant to put anything on the ribs (or anyplace else) that can trap moisture inside the member. If you can encapsulate the whole thing in epoxy, as most stitch & glue or strip plank boats it's one thing, but if it's wood elsewhere, moisture will get into your new ribs. I think I'd focus my efforts on figuring out how to keep the bilge dry and get some ventilation in there.Comment
