  • MinnKota Corrosion?

Has anyone else had issues with bad paint finish on trolling motors? I paid a big $ premium for a Minnkota saltwater series motor over the freshwater version, 24V / 80# thrust. A little nick in the finish led to a rust blossom. I picked at it with a putty knife and the paint started coming off in big sheets. Basically the paint was not bonded to the clean metal body of the motor. It seemed like there might have been some contaminant on the metal before paint that prevented a bond?? The body of the motor looks like it has some very thin galvanizing or other plating, but a couple nicks in the paint led to rust crawling under the finish, and then paint peeling off where there was no rust. Of course I am past warranty, but if this is a widespread issue which others have experienced I will get on my white horse and make a stink with MinnKota.

BTW, is anyone else embarrassed that American manufacturers seem to be in a race to the bottom of the quality scale of whatever they (we?) produce? eg; despite the large price difference, I do not see any American-brand shop vacuum cleaners in the professional boatbuilding shops in Port Townsend, Wa.

I have a saltwater model that I pull out every few years. I just went down and looked at it, the paint is peeling as you describe. But it's over twenty years old, so I don't mind.

I have a 36 pound Newport Vessels saltwater trolling motor and have the same problem. Whole sheets of paint are coming off the housing, especially the skeg and the sharp edge around the back of the motor housing. I assumed it was because it was a cheaper motor though.

So, I stripped it and tried a couple primers and none inspired confidence, so I primed it with G-Flex epoxy and painted it with a couple coats with Pettit EasyPoxy. Hopefully this thread will be in the digital trash before I find out if it worked well.
