  • Roger Whittaker R.I.P.

I can't say that I listened to him all that often, but he had a powerful voice.

"Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip." - Will Rogers

    A favorite:

You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

87 years. Good long life. Had to play a couple of songs to trigger my memory bank, and it came back. My new spouse had brought a Whittaker LP into our marriage. I now remember wishing Roger would pick up the pace a little bit. Every song seemed just a tad bit to slow.

Whittaker was a very clever musician with a quick wit and grounded way about him. His african colonial view point made him very worldly and he loved all kinds of music. He influenced many and was regarded as a friend to many of the great music artists of our past. His style is British Americana with folk and country. Johnny Cash thought highly of him.

In high school I worked part time for a few years at a radio station. Mostly doing a classical show, but a couple of hours just spinning discs on the station's regular format.

Whittaker was prominent on the Playlist. His relaxed, rich voice and storytelling orientation was lovely, and a big contrast with a lot of other music popular then ... and now.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.
