  • Grizzlies stalking hikers on video

This made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Two grizzlies stalked a small group of hikers for 20 minutes remaining 10 to 15 meters behind them on the trail.

    It's from Field and Stream:

Nicholson was the only person carrying bear spray. At one point, the smaller of the two grizzlies bluff charged the group. "From my training, I know that that is a normal thing," Nicholson said of the bear's bluff charge. "The best thing to do is, of course, to stay calm and keep a slow, slow pace, so that's exactly what we did."
Fancy that. 20 people meet 2 bears in the woods and nobody gets mauled and nobody gets shot.

Not unusual. The best defensive activity in bear country is to travel in a group. The larger the group the better. A single hiker may have had a different outcome.

The best defensive activity against any large predator is to be in a group. It has been so since we climbed down from the trees.

Near Moraine Lake, next to Lake Louise, probably the most photographed mountain lake in Canada. Been there a few times.

There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

A friend of mine spent a few years living and working in Alaska. Where he lived, a hike meant carrying a gun.

He told me of the time he came over a rise and found a decapitated moose on the trail, still warm, and knew that the grizzly that took it down was in the brush watching him. He backed away slowly and left the area, never saw the bear, and never had to use his gun.

Personally, I appreciate that they exist and I am content to see them through binoculars. Thirty feet behind me and dogging my trail is way too close for comfort.

Gee George, what a novel concept. Do you ever read the thread before you post?

                        Nope? Thought so.
