Ted's point has merit. There needs to be a clear line and probably is. If your college roommate and now a billionaire, can you join him on vacation?

The real question is whether Oprah has a case before the court.

Regarding Brown Jackson, she disclosed promptly no issue at all.

However, I do know this, if you take Brett Kavanaugh fishing make sure and bring along a third person, otherwise Brett will drink all your beer, and quite possibly he'll boof it into someplace other than where he stuffs the pie in.

How does our forum ethical police find this?

            ---------------------------------------------------
WASHINGTON (AP) — Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson disclosed Wednesday that she received a $1,200 congratulatory floral display from Oprah Winfrey and $6,580 in designer clothing for a magazine photo shoot in her first months as the first Black woman on the Supreme Court.
The details of gifts given to Jackson were among the reports provided by most members of the court in their annual filings, which give a partial window onto their finances. The reports were released Wednesday.
But the report that was most anticipated — that of Justice Clarence Thomas, who has been under scrutiny for his receipt of undisclosed gifts from a Republican donor — was not among the filings. Thomas, along with Justice Samuel Alito, sought an extension for up to 90 days.
Thomas’ receipt of gifts, valued at several hundred thousand dollars, from the Republican donor Harlan Crow has prompted calls for ethics reform on the nation’s highest court. It was not clear why either man needed more time.
            Well...

            1. She reported the gifts as required by law.

            2. Somebody sending you flowers (regardless of how expensive they might be — have you priced anything significant from a florist recently?) to congratulate you on your new job hardly counts as anything out of the ordinary.

            3. I believe it is pretty ordinary practice that when celebrities do fashion shoots, gratis, that they get to keep the clothes involved as a gratuity in lieu of compensation. And it was, was it not, a promo piece about her and her new job? One might call that PR work for the institution for which you work.

And, as I said, she reported the gifts properly.

Unlike certain a certain justice who see decades of gifts like free travel on private jets, vacations on megayachts, $20,000 rare books, and suchlike as such ordinary things that they're not worthy of mention.

Why and how is this different now from CT gift problems?

My employer (Nordstrom) has this policy regarding gifts. Seems like Justices of the Supreme Court and other judges with lifetime tenure ought to be held to a standard at least this strict.

              IMPROPER GIFTS

Seeking or accepting gifts, trips, or other items of value from individuals and organizations with whom we do business — or may potentially do business — could create the impression that the gift improperly influenced our decision to do business with the gift giver. As a result, neither you nor your family members may accept gifts from customers, current or potential vendors, or competitors unless the gift is:

              • A non-cash gift of nominal value. “Nominal value” generally means the fair market value of all the gifts received from a single customer, vendor, or competitor does not exceed $100 in a calendar year.

              • A gift or prize that is an authorized promotional prize provided by a vendor to stimulate business. The $100 limit does not apply.

              • Product provided by Nordstrom or by a vendor (‘gratis’) given to employees primarily for product knowledge, as well as to improve familiarity with a vendor’s brand and quality. The $100 limit does not apply.

              • A tip if you work in a Nordstrom Restaurant, Specialty Coffee, Beauty Services, Spa, Valet, Shoe Shine department, or any other department where tips are routine.

You may also receive invitations from a current or potential vendor, customer, or competitor to attend a social function, like a meal, sporting, cultural, or entertainment event. Participation in such social functions is generally acceptable and is not subject to the $100 gift limitation above, provided that:

              • The vendor, customer, or competitor is also attending the social function with you.

              • The cost of your participation in a single social function does not exceed $250.

              • Your participation in all social functions with a single customer, vendor, or competitor does not exceed an aggregate value of over $250 in a calendar year.

Participation in a social function that is not generally accessible to the public or where the cost of participation would exceed $250 must be escalated to the Office of Ethics and Compliance for advance approval. If approved, you will be required to pay the cost of your participation that exceeds $250.

Finally, you may be asked to attend vendor-sponsored business-trips. These could include trips to view merchandise or attend educational or business-related conferences. Such trips are also generally permitted provided they have a business purpose, and you receive prior approval from an Executive Team leader.

I seriously like you George. I hope one day we meet and you can witness my comedic mischief first hand. You'll see the sparkle in my eye and the hear the laughter in my jests and skewed observations - if you are not amused I'll take my lumps if necessary. I always buy the first beverage of choice round and graciously proceed from there.

Nothing exceptional about. Keeping the clothing is standard operating procedure, and she reported it, as required by law.

Thomas' acceptance of gifts of travel on private aircraft is (1) explicitly required to be reported by the 1978 Ethics Act (so, I would imagine, is travel by private ship), and (2) Thomas did not do so. For decades.

Never mind that Harlan Crow is a political activist who has [had] cases before Thomas, and who funds political groups that bring cases before Thomas and the Supreme Court.

Also bear in mind the delta in scale, 2-3 orders of magnitude. She accepted an ordinary gift of clothing worth (retail, full-price) some $6,500, and duly reported per the law.

Thomas accepted a travel gift worth some $500,000 dollars (and failed to report it), and the total value of the "gifts" he has failed to report likely tally up to the millions of dollars.

Ignoring the dutiful reporting by one party and lack thereof by another party, it is -- at worst -- the difference between chucking a bag of trash out of the car and dumping a dump truck load of garbage by the roadside.

You have shown you lack wonder and joy in your life. This has gone on way too long. How do we help repair you?

Perhaps it is time to have a EBS near you in Portland. We will see how many bubbles are in your pitcher and perhaps add some more.
