Causing an estimated 500 deaths annually (as compared to only 22 for lions), hippos are deadly land mammals. This is because they are very aggressive and territorial, and have a habit of charging at boats and capsizing them.

I remember hearing on the CBC about a guy that paddled a canoe down the Zambezi River many years ago. His canoe got bitten by a hippo. It was chewed right half in two. Fortunately, he had glass and resin as part of his spares, and he didn't lose them, so he patched the boat together and carried on. He figured the most dangerous critters in the river were the hippos, not the crocodiles.Comment
