  • The future of work and income in an AI world

We seem to be suddenly starstruck with AI, which I guess makes sense given the realization by many of how quickly artificial intelligence is progressing.

What’s missing, apart from some seemingly random intellectualizing in academia, is any kind of structured planning to cope with the economic and societal challenges that an AI world will bring.

I think a good case can be made that we’ve generally been pitiful in our societal response to climate change, but by comparison our efforts to conceptualize and plan for the societal and economic effects of AI is so minuscule as to be virtually unobservable.

Any State enforced restriction or conditions on AI and it's consequences are unlikely to be ever implemented in America. In Russia and China it will be devil take the hindmost. Lots of people are going to be hurt, an inadequate word.

It is already out. You can not undo what has been released.

In the US, I rather think that our increasingly hamstrung political system will make it impossible to have any sort of wide ranging, serious discussion about the changing nature of what it means to work and earn a living in such a world. And then there’s the whole question discussing the feasibility of implementing some sort of universal basic income or some other solution to a creating a new society with some degree of financial liquidity to drive whatever economy emerges.

Pax Americana is ending. What comes next is driven by international market forces and the redistribution of hard and soft power. Let's just stop thinking that a free market is an American market. Everyone knows believe that no one in the seat gives a crap about the inequity - they do not have a plan nor will they. The doors are wide open to raping the middle class. There is real fear about how many investment bankers, lawyers and doctors and engineers are going be found redundant. They have been the top end the economic ladder since the end of the industrial revolution - In just a few years 80 percent of white collar workers will not be needed.

The rich are not interested in sharing - AI will ensure they get it all. AI will ensure by 2050 that the US will be on its ear economically and China and India will be leaders in military domination and geopolitics.

Good luck farming virtual reality. Facebook has yet to begin to make a cent in the meta universe. What ever comes from the virtual universe will be AI driven content.

The cost of the current form of AI is much too expensive to use. An AI search is about 1000 times more expensive than a Google search and much less accurate.
                Life is complex.

^ silly fellow, AI isn't for the plebes to search with. your/our searches are just part of its learning.

I asked Chatgpt - Whast kind of structured planning do we need to cope with the economic and societal challenges that an AI

Great question! To cope with the economic and societal challenges that AI presents, we need to have a structured planning approach that includes a focus on education and training, ethical considerations, and collaboration across sectors. This means investing in education and training programs to ensure that people have the skills and knowledge needed to work with AI technologies. It also means recognizing the ethical implications of AI and developing policies and standards to ensure that it is used in a responsible and safe manner. Finally, collaboration across sectors is essential, as AI has the potential to impact all aspects of society, from healthcare to transportation to finance. By working together, we can develop solutions that benefit everyone.

I'm pleased it was a great question. It must get so many every day that for mine to be considered great - well, i'm quite pleased with myself.

Re: The future of work and income in an AI world

I watched a segment on the tube yesterday that showed an unmanned robotic agricultural machine that operated 24/7 passing over crops, weeding with lasers (maybe? I think?) and collecting data on what was in the ground. The data is useful for all kinds of assessments: planting, harvesting, rotating crops, soil testing, etc. There will likely be, if there aren't already, unmanned robots for doing all those functions 24/7 too. Currently the farmer monitors the outputs. AI may be developed to do that function.
For the most part experience is making the same mistakes over and over again, only with greater confidence.

Probably going to look a lot like the insect world with drones gathering resources for the queen.
