IMO, the academics should take a page from Gym's playbook.... and simply ignore the subpoena's.

Ignoring subpoenas only seems to work for members of Congress. Trying ignoring one in the real world in any context and there'd likely be a Sheriff knocking on your door in short order.

Get taken in for a deposition and sit there mute and likely be looking at the world through striped sunshine held on contempt charges, also in short order.

Quite possibly. But 'the optics' would be really bad for the Jordans of the Senate. Undoubtedly, this is an option that's been discussed by those parties.
