  • Volvo EX30

My cousin is a data scientist — and recruiter!? — for Volvo in Götenberg, Sweden. She's been named as an "ambassador" for tomorrow's launch of the new Volvo EX30, a small, all-electric SUV. So she's in Milan, Italy for the launch of the EX30.

Ambassador for a Car? I would never have imagined it! On a whim, together with 638 other employees, I took a quiz, wrote a few paragraphs about why I am passionate about working for Volvo Cars, and was so inspired to talk about it without waiting to second-guess myself that I recorded a two-minute video first thing in the morning sans makeup to say why I thought I might be a good candidate. Over a month later, I was shocked when my manager informed me that I was selected as one of 15 employee ambassadors for the Volvo EX30!

This means I am headed to Milan tomorrow to be present at the unveiling on June 7th of Volvo Cars smallest ever, all-electric SUV, and most climate friendly of all models so far that prioritises safety above all else.

This is really meaningful to me personally, not just because I work for the company, which is one of the largest employers in my adopted country.

You see, a Volvo is the reason my aunt and cousin were not seriously injured or even killed in an accident many years ago. Volvo Cars also won an award from the environmental council of one of my personal heroes and former employers, President Jimmy Carter, and when I learned more about how it has since been the standard for safety and environment in the US automotive industry and beyond, I became even more proud to work here.

In the countdown to the launch, I will be sharing about my adventure, the EX30, and, since I am in the business of understanding talent, some stories about my fellow ambassadors and other people with the diverse superpowers needed to turning our ambitious vision for the EX30 and our other game-changing vehicles a reality.

You can join in and watch the launch live here: https://ex30event.volvocars.com/

Volvo has a lofty goal of selling only fully electric models by 2030, and the automaker thinks its newest EV, the 2025 EX30 SUV, will be key to the plan.

If I spent all my life savings on one of these, could it tow a small boat on a trailer a hundred miles out & back in a day?

Built one out on the UK website: https://www.volvocars.com/uk/cars/ex30-electric/

£42,500 ($53,000), price didn't mention if it was ex-VAT or not, though.

Nominal range is 300 miles (well... 298 ). Towing capacity 1,400 kg (trailer weight). So I'd imagine yes on the boat.

"Nominal range" likely does not include a #3k trailer...
I would be nervous about that bit

Would seem so, yes... "all up" my rig doesn't reach past 200 kg. No VAT here, just sales tax, shipping, dealer prep, MSRP, licensing, and oh yes the Stage III or IV charger in my garage... hmmm.

US delivery a year from now, pre-order for US $500.

Have to go buy some Lottery tickets after work....

Yes, from other examples it seems as if carrying a load, or pulling a trailer substantially reduces range.

Or running a heater in the winter or A/C in summer I'd expect.

There's no 'free lunch' when it comes to energy conservation; you either use what you have immediate access to wisely or you run out at the most inopportune moments.

The front end is so ugly that I couldn't bear to look at it.

It is rather fugly pugly. First thing I noticed. A bit of an echo of a Ford F350 in it's blunt verticality...
