Re: Bet THAT made some noise.
That was lightning and the hull is okay? I guess the mast is stepped on the keel? That's amazing!"Where you live in the world should not determine whether you live in the world." - Bono

Re: Bet THAT made some noise.
My boat got a lightning hit at the top of the mast and lightning can do strange things. The VHF antenna was blown to pieces, the VHF itself was fried to a lump, the anemometer & associated instrument was fried, and the oil pressure gauge was fried. Yes, the OP gauge. No idea why that was hit, but none of the other gauges were touched, The radar, mounted on a lower spreader, was fine - as was the masthead light - mounted inches from the VHF antenna."If it ain't broke, you're not trying." - Red GreenComment

Re: Bet THAT made some noise.
Lightning!? C’mon guys. This is a 36’-40’ open transom racing sled with a stayed carbon fiber mast. Although I don’t know the story, I’m guessing it snapped from overload during a race. I guess I’ll have to ask on the dock, but I’m kind of doubting it was lightning.Comment

Bet THAT made some noise.
Carbon fiber fails suddenly and explosively. All it would take is to lose a shroud or a stay.Last edited by Nicholas Carey; 06-06-2023, 10:38 AM.You would not enjoy Nietzsche, sir. He is fundamentally unsound. — P.G. Wodehouse (Carry On, Jeeves)Comment

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.Comment

Re: Bet THAT made some noise.
Isn’t carbon fiber pretty conductive? It seems that more damage would be visible, at deck level or shroud ends, if a lightning strike. More likely too much backstay tension?Comment

Re: Bet THAT made some noise.
Don’t see a class or brand name on the boat, and no one around to ask. I’m not up on modern racers. Maybe Ted or someone can ID it.
