Did Hoyt improve on the catboat?

    Or is the Marshal better?

    other eff glass catboat builders:
    arey's pond
    cape cod shipbuilding
    menger
    com-pac
Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

If we're just going <20' with no bottom limit I'm sticking with the Beetle.

If it's <20 >15 then yeah I can see a case for the alerion but I'd need to know more about the reality of owning a freestanding rotating mast before actually spending money.

The Marshall Sanderling would be my first choice. I had the opportunity to buy one once for 3K. One of my biggest ever boat regrets, among many.

I'd say the Hoyt boom is not an improvement. A neighbor has an Alerion 19 and he was wondering if we wanted to go partners on it with him. He isn't here much and wanted to share the costs, etc. I went for a sail with him and was disappointed having sailed Marshalls and Beetles quite bit in my youth. The Hoyt boom is kind of stiff in rotation and the sail itself is not the best shape. IMO the point of catboats is the gaff rig.

I've never understood what the separate boom brings to the party. For my money, I'd go for the Marshal 18-ft Sanderling:

The Sanderling is a common sense daysailer/weekender offering a spacious cockpit and roomy cabin unrivaled by any boat of similar length. LOA: 18'2” LWL: 17’6” Beam: 8' 6" Draft: 19"board up & 4' 4" board down Sail Area: 253 sq. ft. Displacement: 2200 lbs. Ballast: 500 L

Or one of the cats from Arey's Pond, like this 19-footer:

[A $96,000 daysailer, though. And that's before you add the electric inboard or an outboard]

19' Caracal Meet Caracal, the new 19′ Arey’s Pond design! Caracal is a distinctive catboat built for comfortable or competitive sailing, rigged to enab ...

I prefer a gaff rig for a catboat

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.

Out of production, so not applicable to the question.

Circa 2002, Com-Pac Yachts down in Florida bought the rights to the design along with the tooling and modified the design into their Horizon Cat and their Horizon Day Cat designs.

The "improvement" added to Halsey Herreshoff's design seems to be a [shallow] fin keel, for "added stability and windward performance."

[edited to note:] Looks like they got rid of the barn door rudder in favor of a space rudder, and eliminated the outboard well as well.

The Horizon Cat is a classic boat for the diehard traditional sailor - a real Cape Cod cat with a shallow fin keel for added stability and windward performance.

The Horizon Day Cat is a classic daysailer with room for you and your friends - a real Cape Cod cat with a shallow fin keel for added stability and windward performance.

What might be an interesting version of a cat rig would be a mast with much more torsional flex than bending flex. That way the sail could weather cock to depower the rig.
Maybe one of our designers can explain better than I.

Sorry Ted but that’s not a Catboat - Obviously you’ve spent far too many years of the west coast to know exactly what a catboat is.
