Yes James River about 30 miles up river from the city.

Powhatan State Park, it is one of the newest State parks.

I plan on going camping there in a couple of weeks.

Does that boat slide have a winch mounted at the top. I know of a similar one along the Etowah River in north Georgia that has a hand cranked winch for pulling boats up.

Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

We like having you here, and really want you to keep your head above water and continue to post in The Bilge.

Technically you are complying with state law if the PFD is in the boat, and the game warden probably will not give you a ticket. But in a really small boat you don't have time to put on a stowed PFD if there is an emergency.

Also, state regs require you to have a "sound producing device" (whistle, etc.) and to give signals per the Rules of the Road. If you are out after dark in a manually propelled boat you are supposed to show a white light "in time to prevent a collision." A flashlight is OK, but an inexpensive battery operated all-around light, always turned on, is even better.

I sort of knew this stuff, but didn't really have it nailed down until we started writing safety procedures for the Middle River trash cleanup.

P.S. Attach the whistle to your life jacket. A lanyard around your neck is a strangulation hazard. Ask anybody who works in a psychiatric hospital.
