  • The first local strawberries of the season.

    .
I purchased two quarts yesterday from a local farm. These are the first local strawberries I have seen for sale. They are delicious! Not a huge as those found in the grocery stores but sweeter and more complex. I ate my fill on the drive home.

Do you like strawberries? Are any of you allergic to them? How do you like to prepare them?

I like to eat most fruit simply out of hand. But this is my favorite way to eat strawberries.

We’ve been eating locally grown strawberries for months now, granted they’re greenhouse grown and not as good as field ripened but they’re better than average. Next time your up by Lake Erie after dark look north we’ll be glowing at ya.

The first local strawberries of the season.

Our local berry season is coming, too.Fresh, local berries are just so good.

Make a smoothie with them. just a little ice and berries in the blender.

They are also good as a sweet counterpart to peppers and or onions in a salad.

Strawberries are just about done here, but my blackberries and blueberries are ripening up. Local peaches should be available soon, too.

Organic only...strawberries are at the top of the dirty dozen list.
I put em in the blender, not in the oven

When we used to live in Oxnard, CA in 1972 / 1973, I used to purchase 2 full cartons of ripe strawberries from a woman who ran a fruit stand there. Whenever I would drive to the stand, the lady would place the strawberries in the car, and then dump 3 or 4 quarts of extra strawberries on top ( no charge ) . Then the fun began - a speed run to Palm Springs to deliver strawberries to my mother--in-law. She did love them ! ! !

I like to have 4 oz of strawberries on yogurt each day.

The only strawberries that I like are the tiny fraises de bois, wild strawberries. They're smaller than a raspberry, sweet, and the seeds are so tiny they're unnoticeable. Store bought strawberries make a fine jam, but that's all. AFAIK.

The only organic Strawbs we can get are either from the Farmers Market or from Canadian greenhouses

We just got some nice strawberries from a local farm stand. We baked a pound cake and made whipped cream to go along with them. Good stuff! I agree that the usual grocery store produce doesn’t compare.

There's nothing like picking perfectly ripe strawberries from your own garden. Varieties you chose specifically for flavor... not shippability. And that you didn't hose down with chemicals. We used to have that, but don't where we are. Fantasizing, though.

Organic local berries from the neighborhood natural foods store, or farmer's market, are pretty good also. I just haven't seen 'em here yet.

And supermarket berries are a nasty hoax. They look good, but taste is lacking and they're sprayed with lots of poisons. I'll go without before I go that route.
