  • How gun violence is reshaping American lives

Avoiding public places, moving home... how the threat of random gunfire is changing the way people live.

Around 60% of adults say they have talked to their kids or other relatives about gun safety, according to a survey by KFF, a non-profit organisation focused on health policy.
Some of these conversations are sparked by lockdown drills in US classrooms. In some cases, students as young as five are taught when to barricade doors and when to run for their lives if a gunman is prowling the corridors.

Recently, Morgan Hook's nine-year-old daughter Elise came home from school and took her family by surprise when she said the drills would not be much use if the gunman just shot down the door.

Without freedom of speech, we wouldn't know who the idiots are.

A high school in Seattle has gone to remote learning because of the threat of gun violence.

Concerns around an afternoon shooting in a reported First Hill street robbery a mile and a half away from the Central District campus appear to have been behind the closure of Garfield High in the …

Can a 5 year old handle the recoil of a 22 caliber hand gun? If so perhaps one of the gun makers could produce special 22 caliber hand guns scaled for kindergarten and lower grades. Would the NRA approve?

The only thing that will stop a bad 5 year old with a gun is a good 5 year old with a gun.

Guess there's no money to be made by not letting the bad guy have a gun.
"Banning books in spite of the 1st amendment, but refusing to regulate guns in spite of "well regulated militia' being in the 2nd amendment makes no sense. Can't think of anyone ever shot by a book

From what I've seen in the news, it's the 3 year olds you have to watch out for. It'd be funny if it wasn't true :-/

Lots of bad stuff in today's society are reshaping American lives. When I was a kid, we weren't taught about 'stranger danger'. Cops were your friends. Most people were basically honest. Heck, you could survive an atomic bomb by hiding under your school desk. At 8 years old, I'd ride my bike downtown to get a haircut. By myself. My parents gave me a little extra money so I could get some penny candy. Oddly enough, there were people walking around carrying guns. It was nothing to see a hunter walking down Main Street with a shotgun and a game bag, heading home from a successful hunt in the marshes behind Town Hall. We live in a sick and dangerous society. Sad.

The reporting of that young blonde girl being kidnapped changed a lot. Parents were afraid to let kids walk to school. FBI said kidnappings by strangers was a fairly steady number from year to year, but that year more made the news, creating the impression there were more of them.

With guns, a bit of the opposite is true. There have been more mass shootings this year than days. So why do some of them get lots of news coverage and others get ignored?

I think the 24/7 news cycle does a lot to inspire whackos. If you're a loser and suicidal anyway, why not go out in a blaze of glory? Every event is covered in excruciating detail, including the affect it has on the families and the community. I remember at one time they weren't going to name or show the perpetrator. That didn't last long.

i believe that almost all metrics of violence towards children, with the exception of gun violence at schools and churches, have fallen significantly and consistently since the 1950s through to today; that includes child abuse and neglect, abduction, and sexual assault and rapes and homicide; its far safer to be a child in the physical world now than it has ever been - virtually things are different of course, children face a myriad of maladies, many of them criminal in the social media world

crimes towards children and youth follow the trends of all violent crime which is also over the same time period falling

the meme of these being more dangerous times than in the past is generally untrue and often a lie spread for political or other advantage

Actually they're not all covered. More mass shootings than days this year. How many got covered?
