We have a drive-in about 15 miles away - but the skeeters are hungry.

Just because you don't know how to fix it doesn't mean it can't be DIYed. With the exception of a clutch replacement and a couple of midwinter oil changes I have done all the maintenance on my 2011 Mazda 3 myself as well as most on my 1990 F-150. With cheap OBD ll scanners it makes diagnosing problems a lot easier.
Ten years ago I replaced the points and condenser on my 1976 BMW R-75 motorcycle with electronic ignition. It took about four hours to do and I haven't had to touch it since. Previously it was something that I had to adjust at least once a year and replaced every three. I got a noticeable increase in power and 15% better fuel economy.Last edited by Jfitzger; 06-01-2023, 09:34 AM.Comment

Re: Something from the past that we need to bring back…
a well designed carburetor is a thing of beauty. a manual choke - esp for a truck working a field (adjust it to give throttle before closing the choke for a quick idle adjust) - is a joy. granny first/reverse for working a field and then running to town is such a simple obvious goodness (my current p/u has a 3.4 first/reverse and 3.08 rear end.. wtgdf!?!?! Arrrggg!!!). breaker points are simple, easy, and I have to imagine present (in their entire life including manufacture) less pollution to the world. all too many 'improvements' are solutions in search of a problem - that make more & greater problems.
Robert Persig's one good book touched on some of these things.
I have to say, tho.. bosch k-jetronic mechanical fuel injection was nice - and the pump was _not_ in the tank.Comment

Right.A carburetor is a highly precise, carefully-designed mechanism which supplies an engine with exactly the wrong fuel-air mixture under almost every condition of load, speed, throttle position, temperature, and air density. And by the time they had to meet any kind of air pollution requirements, they were very, very far from simple.
Have you guys forgotten smog?

I'm more a fan of the not having to fix it crowd. Tune up the fuel injection. Huh? Set the electronic ignition and change little parts. Um, ok?
Remember seeing signs at all the gas stations .. tune up special $xx There's no such thing as a tune up any more and I'm completely good with that.
Having said that it has gone too far the other way. I think the apex of engines came in the late 80s or 90s. Very simple fuel injection with a simple module. That's it no on board computer per se everything very DIY friendly.Comment

Re: Something from the past that we need to bring back…
A symphony of elegant simplicity it was. Big honkin intake manifold holding the simple little carb to the side with access to it and everything else that an elephant could get to. A hammer and spanner wrench could fix about anything. Maybe add a screw driver too. But you better like fixing it because its an ongoing process to keep it happyComment
