Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

We crossed an aqueduct with a 20 or 30 knot beam wind, with the bow cranked to the windward bulkhead and the stern nearly on the leeward, throttle pegged for the whole 4 knots the boat would do.
That was near Stratford though, not as dramatic as the Welsh one.

I love the idea of taking a canal trip sometime.

Without friends none of this is possible.

There's an interesting passage in one of the Hornblower books where he takes a canal boat to his next posting. Pretty interesting, actually. This pic helps visualize it.

Depends on whether he blagged a ride on a cargo narrow boat, or bought passage on a fly boat.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

And then you see that aqueduct (I assume that's what it's called) and it takes my breath away.

It was a fast boat, the drunken horseman broke his head , the helmsman replaced him and Hornblower had to helm the boat which he gladly did to get to London asap. Frank

A fly boat, then. The crews worked in shifts so that they could keep the boat going 24/7, with more than one horse towing for extra speed. They carried perishable goods, including human beans.

On a bicycle Forum, I read about a trip along the Erie Canal Towpath, using a trawler yacht as a SAG wagon.

In Europe the Canal du Nivernais is probably the most beautiful canal, 180 km with 110 locks.
