Re: What advice would you give your younger self?
I don't know if Helen Mirren and Judi Dench are friends, or even if the see eye-to-eye, but those two are role models for us all."Where you live in the world should not determine whether you live in the world." - Bono
"Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip." - Will Rogers
"Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others." - Groucho MarxComment

Re: What advice would you give your younger self?
I'd give the same advice I try to give myself right now; aim higher.
I still don't listen.
I often wonder was it a good decision to have kids.
I think I'd have had, would have, far more fun and adventures. But I love the boys and settling down brought my shed, needing full time work brought tools.... I need to have a few more attempts at dove tail joints, aim higher and all that.
Skuthorp, I think I'm doing the job you want. I feel like a fake, I kind of fell sideways into it, but it really fits. I've always had a strange kind of tangential luck; rarely lucky in what I want to be lucky in, but often lucky just to the side of it.
I'll never win the lottery but the other day two whip birds fly down and hung out about a meter from me. Unbelievable. It's all fun and games until Darth Vader comes.Comment

Todd and Lee pose two points. Yes, Regan gold was an unrealistic investment. Did I seize the brass ring? Nope.
Per Lee, I wish I had me now to guide me in the past. I would have a Vietnamese wife.Comment

Re: What advice would you give your younger self?
Don't have faith in anyone but yourself.
People will dislike you no matter what, so don't bother seeking their approval.
Real friendship is so rare that you will likely not trust it when it comes. So don't bother.
Don't marry someone who has kids.
Charity should only be done in anonymity on both sides. Do good but don't get involved, otherwise you will only be disappointed.
Join a union.
There are no good politicians. Real change will never come. Don't bother getting involved. People suck.
No body cares about your opinion, they simply want a means to judge you, not to understand your stance. Just don't bother.
I am sure that there are lots of exceptions to all of the other points, and am sorry if those are what your lifes experiences have left you with.

They're friends as well as professional colleagues, they, with Maggie Smith made a wonderfully interesting movie about their careers in theatre and film.
Well worth seeing if you have any interest in the lives and views of three really classy women.

Talk my best friend out of going to California and getting a job on a fishing boat.If he ever drinks the brew of 10 tanna leaves, he will become a monster the likes of which the world has never seen

Re: What advice would you give your younger self?
I would tell my younger self to take advantage of the opportunities that I was offered more often. Most if the best paths I've taken were on advice from others that did see that I might have a better future, while I might be more focused on the fun of the present. Starting out as a high school dropout and winding up with an advanced degree working with the greatest research organization in the world would not have been possible without these interventions.Comment

Don't settle for less than what you want. Every time I have, I've regretted it.
And - buy land near the interstate - those fields I helped mow have turned into hotels & such.
Spin - I have to say your description in the OP (other than "older") is - shall we say - optimistic."If it ain't broke, you're not trying." - Red GreenComment
