  • Ed Monk Tugboat for sale. Twice?

Saw this sweet tug for sale at yacht world. Then, today, it’s on Facebook Marketplace using the same pictures for $10,000 less. Scam???

Common scam, grabbing a photo online and offering it as a fraudulent sale.

Could be real. I've long admired her. But her owner died last year, his son took it on but he already owned another small tug, and Teal needs some care.

On yachtworld she’s $49,500 for sale in Shelton
. Simultaneously she’s on Facebook marketplace for $39,000. The FB ad says she’s in Gig Harbor.

        What’s a “horn Timber”?

I have offered things for sale on FB Marketplace and CraigsList and just absent-mindedly published two different prices. For example $ 160 and $150, by mistake.

          Could be similar here.

Or, seller is fishing for a buyer. Having seen both ads, offer him the lower number.

I saw a camperised van for sale on craigslist a year or so ago, had a few alarm bells.. very nice condition, very good price. I messaged anyway and received a reply that tried to steer me to having it shipped after payment. lol I then grabbed a pic and did a web search and sure enough the pictures were for a van in north eastern usa and not Victoria BC. I messaged back the same with some accusations of their intentions and I'll be gall darned if there wasn't radio silence and the add disappeared shortly after. Not saying this tug's double listing is necessarily the same but there's lots of 'players' out there always be cautious. And always add a phone convo to be followed by a personal viewing in any deal.

One kind of distressing thing about a tug is, when you go to do the bottom, there's more under the water than above
As a friend of mine describes them, "floating fuel tanks with just enough superstructure to house the engines and crew.

As Nicholas points out, all fuel tank and deck, no interior. I’m content to admire them from a distance.

I would only consider a tug if the big arse engine was removed and a smaller one installed, freeing up room.

Going to the Olympia Harborfest the last few years has been an eyeopener. Watching those guys maneuver single screw boats with no thrusters has taught me much. I really enjoy handling my boat close. But some of these guys are spinning 6’ and more diameter props, and sometimes with direct drive and air start. When you need to get the stern to the dock and you shut down the engine, move the cams, then restart the engine for one turn only, and watch the stern walk into the dock, that’s boat handling. Or when you come into the waterway on a south heading but you want to lay the dock with the bow north, you just put the bowstem against the dock, put the helm hard over and put it in forward and watch the boat pivot 180 against the dock, that’s boat handling. Learning some of that is the fun part. Don’t need no stinking thrusters.

                        A "chugboat".

The kind where you'll sit pounding down brews with the guys, in this case noodling out how to repair the horn timber without ripping the whole stern off.
For the most part experience is making the same mistakes over and over again, only with greater confidence.

A friend of Dick Wagner had a small workboat named THUG, maybe 15 foot. THUG was quite stoutly built, with a 10 horse one-lung Easthope engine swinging a 36-inch prop (slowly) and produced gobs of torque. I remember working on her while setting up the CWB Wooden Boat Festival one year and moving Zodiac with her.
