Re: Memorial Day 2023 Remember & Honor.

In 1995 my wife had a 5 day seminar in DC. I went with her. On a whim, I went to the archives in College Park to see what I could find out about a friend’s uncle who died in France in late July 1944. I was curious. I signed in and a clerk brought me the After Action reports for the 12th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division. That was the unit on his tombstone. I got to read the actual reports typewritten on onionskin beginning with midnight, 16 hours after they landed on Utah Beach.
But this isn’t about him. It’s about another soldier who died 20 years later.
As I was chatting with the clerk who brought me the July 44 file, she told me of an incident the week before. A college student was researching a period during the Vietnam war. While going through some Killed In Action type reports, he came upon one that had a piece of paper attached to it with a clip. It was a page torn from a small spiral pocket notebook. It said, “I was his Sgt. He was a good kid. This is a dam shame.”
I remember the words because there was a xerox copy posted on a bulletin board in the reading room.
The clerk said they carefully returned the note to the page. It had been there for 30 years, and was treated as a permanent record.
The care and reverence that the archives employees treat those documents with is part of my memory, and that little note is still in that box, where it’s been for almost 60 years.
