Re: 1 metre boats sets sail to cross Atlantic.

I do not have any sympathy for those who never even loaded their craft to full capacity during "sea trails", and then come unstuck. The "row for home" gang were too busy drinking in the pub to even do a full load capsize test before they left, and complained after they were rescued, "they never had the time".

His air vents will have to be permenently shut being that close to the water.

No doubt for the best. His mental state is not where it should have been to even start such a trip.

Yes, it was bonkers to start with and that vid you put was quite disturbing as to his mental state.

In such a small boat, how come it started leaking so soon? And, was not noticed before?

The previous "sea trails" where held on a calm day in the Irish Sea with an unloaded boat. If he had loaded it to capacity, he may have found, if enough wind, the bows get driven under and the air vents flood.

Bad preparation. No one but himself to blame.

This idiot and his ridiculous scheme makes me irrationally angry. I've had a fair amount of potentially dangerous adventures on land and sea but the motivation was always about the joy of being alive in nature. The sensation of being on top of a mountain or surfing a huge wave in a tiny beach cruiser. This stunt B.S. is all about feeding his ego with a moronic suffer fest. It's as meaningful, and requires as much skill, as setting the world record for the most times a man has punched himself in the balls. He's the Kardashian of the sea. I'm glad he failed but I'm glad he failed in way that didn't risk his life or anyone that would have had to save him.

Thats pretty much any offshore sailing, no?

He doesn't look mentally prepared, nor was his vessel prepared. How can a transatlantic vessel sink while just sitting in the harbour? Did it even have a bilge pump?

There is that extensive thread in this place about the most seaworthy craft. I recall consensus was that a seaworthy craft was one with a seaworthy skipper.
If the guy couldn't get his vessel to the point where it could be bullet proof in a harbour he had no business in the Atlantic.

On the other hand, if he was a seaworthy captain his endeavour would have been no more reckless or selfish than any solo sailor in any ocean.

No. Thats pretty much the case of anyone who gets on any ship, ferry or on any body of water.

Why reckless? Do you drive a car alone, go for walks alone? What are the statistical odds of you being involved in a car accident or fallingover and requiring help? Does that make you reckless?

Someone that is this distraught when he is safe on shore and his boat was ruined by bad decisions at the hoist should not be trying to sail the Atlantic in a a boat of any size short of the Queen Mary 2.

he is working on his future as celebrity mariner. like the tin can trimaran guy, who sunk instantly, went on to be handed the reins of that egyptian cargo ship replica and star in a nat geo special.

I never heard of that one. Is that another dreamer inspired by the "Around in Ten" idea? Who the hell even came up with that idea? I did keep up with Sven Lundin ( Yrvind) build, that he eventually scrapped, taking a lot of sponsers money with it.

Yann Quennet who recently circumnavigated in his 12ft scow, had to trailer his boat down to Portugal, apparently, as he would not be allowed to leave a French port for a destination beyond 8 miles.

Its a fine line between personal choice and Government overeach. I am surprised that the local SOLAS outfit did not require him to prove the boat could actually sail and recover from a capsize, before letting him loose. The guy who attempted to kayak from Australia to New Zealnd had to jump through hoops.......not that it helped him in the end.
