I had one of those, and it was one guess for 'first' remembered.

The other was odd. I fell in love with a miniature clam shovel up at the cabin. So my dad painted the handle blue and made it 'my' shovel. I loved to go down to the beach with it and dig random holes - some of which yielded butter clams.

Which was the point of the exercise for me. Loved them clams, and loved finding some. Because - if I found a few - some adult would then feel compelled to finish digging a batch to steam for lunch/dinner.

I red plastic bat. I was a bad ass at 3 when I explored our new house. Then one day, not long after, I was able to focus on the plastic and realized it was covered with little raised dinosaurs. And I distinctly remember this thinking. This is an f’ing toy. I was pissed.

      The spring horse was great.

I also had a colorful steel "top" kind of thing that had a spring loaded plunger on top of it.... You pushed down several times, and it would spin inside, but not outside. It would stand up, and I think there were flashing lights, or maybe they were just things flashing by the outer windows from inside. I distinctly remember when it stopped working, and was completely distraught. It was replaced by a large wooden top with a Y shaped handle and a pull string. That was seriously cool, and I could chase the cats around the house with it, even though I was in leg braces, and couldn't walk.

I had a red and white plastic spinning top that Dad brought home from the servo where he bought fuel- might have been a Coca Cola promo. Late fifties probably. I was playing with it years later when I was in my teens and the two halves separated- top and bottom were different colours. I didn't have any glue so I heated a poker in the fire and melted it back together. No idea where it is, but I'm pretty sure I still have it somewhere. JayInOz

Blocks, then Lincoln Logs and Tinker Toys...and whenever I could I'd snag my folks' poker chips and stack them up and then knock them over.

I had a black cat and a pink dog...sometime later I found a long pink ear and realised it was actually a rabbit.
The colour may be explained by the fact that I was the 3rd child and was supposed to be a girl.

A denim-coloured plush dog with white flappy ears I named Anna. I remember having it since before 4, but I got it earlier than I can remember.

The first one I remember receiving is this LEGO set:

I have a striped calico bag containing about twenty marbles that my grand father used to take to school. He was born in 1891, so they've probably been in that bag for more than a hundred and twenty five years! JayInOz

A rocking horse just like the one John B posted and a little yellow metal tractor with a trailer.
I once thought I was wrong, but I was wrong, I wasn't wrong.

I too had a spinning top that was "pumped" from the top, when I could really get it going it "sang". My Mum was the expert when I was small..
I also had a soft plastic squeezy and squeaky kewpie style doll thing that had a small raised heart on each cheek. His name was "dimples".
My cabinetmaker Dad always make sure that I had blocks and Mum made brilliant brown paper and doweling kites.
Bald, ugly, not too bright but incredibly sexy in an unattractive sort of way....

it is very interesting to see a horse on springs and not on rockers

Other early WW2 toys I remember were a Wellington bomber and a Monospar ambulance plane, built from the Frog Penguin plastic kits by an evacuee lad living with us.
I still have a rather battered Thunderbolt he built from a wooden 'solid' kit.

I had a life sized toy M16. It had individual spring loaded cartridge cases, you loaded a realistic bullet into, and a magazine. Very cool. Only single shot though. Circa 1970.

Got to watch the real deal on Saturday morning tv with Ed Bradley in between Scooby-Doo do and HR Puffin Stuff. With dead VC and wounded GIs out in the jungle.

Bet your ass you could put an eye out.
