  • Tom hanks. voice of sanity?

His commencement speech was the most eloquent version of a call to a return to sanity in your USA. I as a Canadian I can not understand your countries descent into this abyss . How can you all wish to defeat your country on the world stage? 50% of your country is repub but 30% is the maga bunch. Maybe my math is wrong but that would tell me that 15% of your country is holding everyone hostage? When are the rest of you ready to stand up and say enough is enough?

There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

You're not facing the fact that 15% of your country is holding the rest of you hostage for some believed slight to them! In most civilized countries they would deal with it by setting a IQ rating before allowing a vote

Hanks’ speech was well delivered and compelling. I wonder who wrote it, or do we think he did?

Maybe it's the other 85% that need the IQ test for letting it happen.

The liberal tendency to think of rural voters who support Republicans as stupid uneducated rednecks is a big part of what made Trump a success.

And read your post aloud, Mr. IQ. "Setting a IQ rating"? Are you so confident you'd end up on the "approved to vote" list?

Does Hanks support a party, and would one support him?

Nobody expects the grammar police to show up until it's too late. A million apologies, now how about letting us know how you feel about your country being held hostage by a minority of the population?

If you really want to discuss this, it's a usage issue, not a grammar one. Probably TMI around here, though.

A book of short stories, a recent well received novel, and uncredited script rewrites. I’ll bet he wrote it himself.

Re the math: Less than 70% of eligible voters do so at the national level (probably far fewer in state and local races). That's about 160 million voters. IF 50% are GOP voters then 50% of 70% (or 35%, i.e., 75-80 million) are votes cast GOP. Thirty percent of that is 24 million MAGA votes cast at most.

The nation's total population is more than 332 million. MAGA voting is less than 8% of the entire nation. That's not to say there's nothing to be concerned about but it does put some of it in perspective. And when specific issues are raised regarding MAGA concerns ('out of control spending', etc.) they DEFINITELY don't want their Social Security, Medicare and military budgets touched much less cut.

Encouraging and actively promoting Non-MAGA turnout can be effective despite efforts to limit voting rights. MAGA appeal to the general voting population (independents, women and young especially) is on the decline. It's a slow process that the non-GOP cohort needs to take seriously and pretty much is on the ground.

For those who pay much attention to it, the media let's itself go all goggle-eyed and leads with the latest nonsense and gaslighting. They always will. It makes money for them.

For the most part experience is making the same mistakes over and over again, only with greater confidence.

For one thing, the entire population cannot vote. There are people too young, etc. So, we start with potential voting population of 250 million, not total population of 360 million.

Then, we winnow it down to those who actually do vote. Last election that was 150,000,000 people.

At this point, basic math shows that the 15-percent you quoted is really about 30-percent ( people who can and do vote). This is the grouping that matters in election.

Then, we divide that very roughly in half, between republicans and democrats, say 75 million people apiece. So, now 50-percent ( roughly) of those who can and do vote are on opposite sides of the fence.

We are held up by about half those who can and do vote. Why? Because republicans vote more as a block and democrats display more infighting and divisiveness.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.
