  • Any Québécois on board?

We were wondering what Montreal is like in September. Good time to visit? We love to just walk around a city, talk to locals, and check out the highlights.

The heat of summer will have passed. Probably a good time to visit.
I haven't been there in about twenty years but it was nice, clean and very polite the last time
I visited. French is the main language but everyone also speaks the King's English.
The metro is clean and quiet. Lots of underground shopping since the entire city heads underground in the winter.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

Everyone speaks English as long as you don't rub them the wrong way. Very nice architecture, wonderful roadside bar spaces, seek out the old town by the waterfront. Check out the underground as there are all sorts of shops under there..

We stayed at Auberge du Vieux Porte last March-April. It is a nice little hotel with restaurants. Our room had a view of the St Lawrence and the big Ferris wheel. The food is great. Parking is terrible, but at least you can get your car stolen, if it isn't towed for parking in an area that requires a neighborhood sticker. We used valet parking and walked or took cabs. Lots of museums.

I have fond memories of Montreal, the only place I was ever arrested and did jail time (Sentenced to one day for drunkeness). When I got out of the slammer I asked the desk cop how to get to the bus station. He told me he didn't speak English and to go ask somebody else . Of course, maybe things have changed since last week (kidding - it happened in 1975.)
There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

I recommend La Musee des Beaux Artes. Kept an 18 year old me rapt for hours.

Great city (it's where we go if we want a "trip to the city" as it's just over an hour away) & September there is usually nice. You are getting close to foliage season (very late Sept. - early October) at which time rates will go up as will crowds.

As mentioned, the Vieux Porte is great, but there are also plenty of good, more normal hotels in town. Definitely hit the botanical gardens & also the Atwater or Jean Talon markets. The Metro is very good & definitely park your car for your stay. Lots of great restaurants and while French does help, English & courtesy does just fine in Montreal -though less so once you get out into the country.
