  • What foods did you really LIKE as a kid? What are your favorites now?

I always loved “open face” sandwiches as a child. Mom made them with fresh French bread, layered with fresh salted butter, some kind of sandwich meat, maybe cheese on top. Garnished with sweet tomato slices and/or sliced cucumber what was cut part way so you could twist the halves so they could “stand up” on top. Also garnished with fresh parsley.

Writing this makes me to want to make one and have it with my coffee now.

I also loved meatballs & gravy with potatoes and Lingonberry jam. I still like it. Yum

Unless the parents were hosting a brunch, we had simple Sunday brunches as a family that consisted of crackers, cheese, and some seafood. And beer. Any kind of crackers - I didn't care. Really enjoyed all the cheeses my parents brought home. A tradition I really enjoyed.

And my favorite seafood for on top was Pickled Salmon. We made it ourselves, and I relished it. Raw salmon. Salted in layers for a while. Out of the salt and into pickling brine for a while. We always had several batches in process.

Mom always made "grilled cheese" by putting a slice of bread in the oven with a slice of that plastic-wrapped "cheese". As kids, we thought it was a treat, especially if she opened a can of tomato soup.

Now, it's 2 slices of grainy bread and thick-sliced cheddar smothered in buttered and fried in a pan until golden brown with a bowl of rustic tomato soup on the side.

Good hearty beef stew. Simmered until meat is so tender it almost melts in your mouth. Beef, onions, potatoes, carrots, bay leaves, bouillon, peppers, etc., etc..

I like to add sour cream to it when it’s in my bowl. Yum.

Beans on toast were a treat for me. Still like them.
Favourite now? The veggie chestnut pie I make myself. Or a good veggie curry- wish I could get okra here.

My Mam used to make regional austerity food when I was a kid. Steamed suet puddings, like bacon and onion rolly poly. Jam rolly poly, obviously.
Nowadays, in addition to a good roast joint with roasted tatties and Yorkshire puds, I do like a steak and kidney suet pud, and a Lancashire hot pot made with neck chops and black pudding, or a dish of oxtails.
Toad in the hole with baked beans is a reliable fall back.

boiled/steamed Lobster with fresh cut fried potatoes, artichokes with drawn butter, and chocolate mousse for dessert. When I was a kid it was milk for a beverage. When I got a little older, Champagne Brut. When I got a little bit older older, Pale ale.
A close second is steamed mussels with shallots, garlic chopped tomatoes and red onion, served over angel hair pasta, served with a fresh baby spinach and arugula salad with sliced button mushrooms and pitted Kalamata olives, with pale ale now, but ginger beer as a child. (One of the few meals I was able to escape the milk curse)
Can't get any of these items around here with out driving several hours each way, so..... I can dream.

Cucumbers. Oranges and sweet limes from my grandfathers special trees. It wasn’t the food so much as the setting then the food was memorable. Koolaid, fried corn meal mush and baloney at my friends house. Taquitos and tomarillo salsa at my grandmothers. There were a few Basque restaurants we went to as kids when my folks were happy together. The bread, soup, olives, plain spagetti w olive oil garlic and parsley, even the beef tongue was good. Mushroom gravy. Beef Bourguignon.
salami. Mom’s chicken enchiladas and tacos.
There was a chicken dish with bulgur I really liked. Dinty Moore Beef Stew cooked over a sterno can w my brother w a view of the oil fields. Pomegranate from the big tree bush on the corner.

The other treat I really enjoyed was venison or elk tenderloin. My mom liked to mix up dry Lipton's Onion Soup mix to marinate it with. Delicious... and it bring back great memories.
