  • Interesting take on racism

They are getting ready for Juneteenth in Greenville SC. The group promoting this hung up 50 banners of various people. One banner had white people on it, and one had Hispanic people. This seemed reasonable to me (a white guy), as it shows inclusiveness in a 'black' event. Apparently, it was a bad idea. The promoters have taken down those two banners, and apologized. They said that this is a 'black' event, and the (barely) unspoken message is that whites and Hispanics aren't invited. N'kay... wasn't gonna go anyway. Discuss.

There is a time for inclusion and camerarerie. There is a time for solidarity. The oppressed group gets to decide. The oppressed group sometimes has mixed feelings.

Almost always has mixed feelings, I'd say. It's complicated, and I agree the opinions and desires of the disadvantaged group take precedence over their allies. But most of all, timing matters. Support the Black community. But don't try to share the spotlight at their moment, don't use images that suggest a "savior" is needed, etc.--maybe that was the thinking here?

You don't bring people together by pushing some of them away. I think the community made a mistake.

Thanks to accepting lies, we've reached a point where fear is a factor.

I expect many white people WOULD openly support events of this kind, but fear reprisals if they do so. In today's world, one could be risking one's life.

As always, I want to ask, "what is the boundary between Black and white?"

In regards to that, most American blacks are some percentage white. Heck, the 'black' President Obama was 50% white. I have a buddy that found out that he is 10% black from an ancestry search. Should he go to 'black' events, or not? We seem to be accentuating differences, rather than becoming a blended society.

For people who see a difference in white and Black people, where is the dividing line, what is the difference, besides melanin?

Still vague. Does this address your question?

After the centuries of slavery and segregation maintained by murder and intimidation, it might make sense to wait awhile before pointing the finger.

After all, the state of Florida is presently banning books by black authors (e.g. inaugural laureate Amanda Gorman and Nobel winner Toni Morrison).

                        No problem with that?

...In regards to that, most American blacks are some percentage white.
yeas ago I knew a black man in way back rural appalachian KY.. dirt poor, lived in a tar paper covered, tin roofed shack - winters were brutal. everyone knew he was black. strangely, he was all white.. no hint of 'black' in his skin or looks, but he was born black, so black he was.. and treated so by all the good whites - who of course weren't racist. racism is far more subtle than most of those who embrace it are equipped to understand.

Juneteenth is entirely a black holiday.. if you happen to be invited to an event, consider yourself fortunate. if not, try understanding - it will be good for for you.
