Averaging almost 27 knots - impressive!

The team at the top of the overall race leaderboard has set a new 24hrs monohull distance record. As at 2300 UTC on Thursday night, Team Holcim-PRB was at over 630 nautical miles and still adding to its total.

Well, it's not a cat? Not a tri?

Pfft... My little sail and oar boat routinely makes 580+ miles (statute miles) in under 12 hours on my Canadian cruises, with a quick stop for lunch at Subway. Beat that, cats and foilers.

It would take a while for me to get used to the idea of outriggers for the shrouds.

              Well, mono=single

There was foiler and non-folier class in the last Vendee Globe, no one would have complained if a non foiler won.

Im pretty sure not so long ago, there was someone complaining about a triangle sail winning a race....."but....its not a gaff schooner!"

What Is a foiling Trimaran, not a trimaran?

There was footage of Boris Herman onboard Malizia, doing over 30 knots, looking very relaxed. On the first leg of the race, the foils were screaming banshees. Quite remarkable. Feel sorry for whatever whale got hit by another boat.....that musta hurt.

Yeah.....looks like my berthing fess are going to increase by at least 8X. I will pass. Not even a fixed bog, let alone a carbon one.

I would call it a trimaran. It functions as a trimaran.

Not really. A trimaran maintains its stability at anchor. Foilers need to be making a certain speed before the lift effect starts to work.

You are more likely to find the description of "foiling monohull" on the insurance, than "trimaran".

Maybe if you think of them as spreaders at deck level it would be easier. This is Holcim at La Base in Lorient and I highly recommend a visit if you have any interest in high speed sailing craft.

No, a foiler. Not a monohull. Multiple planing surfaces.

Well, to throw another wrench in the works, stepped planing hulls, like this one, also have multiple planing surfaces. It is not a cat or tri and does not foil.

For that matter, there are plenty of planing catamarans( multiple planing surfaces) that do not foil. Here is one:

Sure but the situation is that a monohull is a hull in the water. A foiler replaces that hull with other planing surfaces. It's a foiler. The record is a new record for foilers, not for monohulls. It's getting to the point with outriggers and foils that the 'boat' is simply a platform from which to manage rigs and foils. Not so much a hull or hulls at all.

Maybe there could be a distinction drawn between displacement monohulls and others.
There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.
