  • No idea why

I bought some cheap, light cargo pants from Academy.

They have a thumb hole in each front pocket. It’s weird.

I’ve been wearing pants for a while, but I can’t think of any reason for this.

The pockets are made of mesh for ventilation. So I don’t think it’s an air hole.

Thumb access to the area seems pointless.

Good question; seems like a defect, but in both pockets?

Both pockets. Took some effort to make.

          So many questions.

Some of the 'work jeans' I wear have a stretch waistband (yeah, I know . . . ) - on them, the pocket structure has a similar 'gap' to help flatten the pocket when the waistband stretches. . . YMMV

                  Re: No idea why

Those mesh pockets with the bordered hole are on the inside of the pants. Why would you want to vent your pockets to inside your pants? Putting aside calling it a thumbhole, for the moment, why would a wearer of the pants want such a hole in both pockets?

If the wearer puts a hand in the pocket, from the outside, like normal, the 'thumbhole' is in position above, for a thumb to push back up through it, and within about an inch of the wasteband. It gives access to the inside of the pocket from just inside the wasteband.

It's so you can rest your flagpole in your pocket if your hands are cold from holdling your flag the usual way, in, say, cold rainy weather. So I guess it's a flagpole access hole, for winter weather parades or other marching. If you don't mind having your flag pole emerging from inside your wasteband.

Or it's useful when carrying a small mammal in your pocket and you want it to be able stick it's little head up for fresh air and a look around. So you could call it a pet-head petting hole. But a pet emerging from such a hole, interior to the wasteband would be in danger of being strangled by belly-bulge over the wasteband. It would have to be a mammal with a protected neck, or perhaps a shelled amphibian such as a turtle.

But why mesh pocket interiors, anyway? Do you really need your pocketed stuff, hands maybe, to get more fresh air? Maybe it's for when your pocket is full of water due to being submerged after a boating maneuver, and you want it to drain readily. So they are emergency drain pockets with emergency beacon staff holes. Or one might use the pair of holes, one for each of a pair of staffs, from which to rig a square sail from a shirt, so you can make way while floating on your back after after a boating maneuver. So emergency masthole.

Or, maybe, it's for when, at a party or a toll booth, you want to get a quarter, or a screwdriver, out of your pockets without removing your hands.

The designer went to a bit of work and extra materials to make such a hole-bearing pocket. Why put it inside of the pants instead of putting a useful thumbhole on the front of the pants, for pocket access without using the usual side access? Then you could twiddle your thumbs while you wait for the dentist's assistant, while keeping your hands comfortably in your pockets. Ordinary pockets without access holes for a thumb, make it more difficult to twiddle your thumbs with your hands still in your pockets, which would force one to twiddle in public as it were. Privacy-guaranteed thumb access holes for serious private twiddling and flag pole and emergency mast holding.

                  ***

"I like it! Let's go ahead and order the extra materials, hire pocket-hole bordering staff and associates, push back the release date, and begin the marketing campaign immediately! I can't wait to get to the awards ceremony this year! We'll really show them this time! Think of it, we're the first to come out with mesh pocket thumb access hole cargo pants! No one's ever done this before! I feel giddy. I guess now I can start looking at boats to buy for my vacation this year..."

                  ***

I've never had pockets with such holes, and I've had occasion to do the shirt-front tucking maneuver as above, even though I've only worn a rented tuxedo on the single occasion of my high school senior prom. And look at the trouble that caused. Never again.

These particular pants are all about ventilation and sun protection. Positioning oneself correctly, it does allow unrestricted airflow from the slightly open pockets, across the zone to the other side.

OK then, they are air scoops for when you are running.

Sure, put your keys in mesh pockets, maybe a few allen keys and other loose bits.

The Wife just suggested that the reason to have such a hole in the pocket, specifically for a tuxedo is because of the cummerbund covering the wasteband and being in the way for normal shirt tucking operations.

The mesh pockets are for rapid moisture relief. The thumb holes are for internet speculation.
