    You're in Texas, right?

Maybe those are for holding spare magazines?

If you google 'cowboy jeans' lots of pix show the model with thumbs hooked on the front pockets. This thumb loop just makes that a tad more secure. Of course, real cowboys don't need thumbloops.

no idea why cheap cargo pants would include that feature, though.
I own 2 tuxedos and a set of tails[1] (no morning coat, though). None of them have holes in the trouser pockets. Gentlemen know how to blouse their shirts properly. And if you're wearing a proper waistcoat (as you should be: no cummerbund), it doesn't matter. Especially since the formal shirt is pleated and starched so it's as stiff as a board.

[1] 4 all told, if you count the 1880s-vintage tails.

I’ve been wearing pants for a while, but I can’t think of any reason for this.

The pockets are made of mesh for ventilation. So I don’t think it’s an air hole.

Thumb access to the area seems pointless.

                It's a safety feature - use them.

It's tough to create a car crash if you keep both thumbs in their safety holes, similarly getting properly drunk is almost impossible.....

Think of the accidents you can avoid by using these simple things.

That's what everybody thought when automatic transmissions were invented you know, "keep both hands on the wheel at all times!!!" right?

                  Look where that's put us....
