  • The fake Pentagon explosion,

$100million drop in the market. Russia immediately reposted it everywhere. AI generated. Was it Russia, or has someone made a fortune?

And this is just the start……….

      Re: The fake Pentagon explosion,

      9/11 wasn't fake.

      Or Benghazi, Bhopal.

To my mind there's no right of free speech that's not the work of a human being; machine-generated AI will never make the cut.

Let those who fall for reports of non-events pay the price.

For all the opportunity created by the internet (world's largest library), it is clear that our society has not kept up with our technology. Between this sort of thing and Fox News with all the blogs and pundits lying at every opportunity, it makes me wonder how we will ever become a mature society that can tell truth from lies.

              Re: The fake Pentagon explosion,

This is why I never edit my photos in post, what comes out of my camera is what I shot, blemishes and all.

I saw on the news yesterday there is a new Photoshop that is incorporating AI. They were concerned with making false or misleading images so they are going to include a tag or some marker that when AI is used some form of digital watermark will be embedded.

A fake image purporting to show an explosion near the Pentagon was shared by multiple verified Twitter accounts, causing confusion and leading to a brief dip in the stock market. CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan has more.

                  Re: The fake Pentagon explosion,

A bit ironic - as these folks rush their AI creations to market, sans safety nets, they are actually undermining their products - no one will trust the end results.

Of course, there will also be collateral damage.

This illustrates one of my main concerns about the stock market. A quickly debunked picture gets posted and the market tumbles, Jerome Powell sneezes and the market tumbles, corporate profits are good but not as expected and the market tumbles...There's nothing particularly rational about it.

Had I viewed a Twitter pic of this “explosion” my first step would have been to immediately searched for DC news. If there had been such an explosion, there would have been live coverage ongoing.

I wonder how much of the drop was automatic and not a human decision? Not that humans are much good at it either, such a pic might just kick in the fight or flight reaction in humans. Flight being this one and 'wham bam, thank you stock market' and buybuybuy.
