Re: From a college alumni association lecture…

The term "Valois Dukes of Burgundy" is employed to refer to the dynasty which began after King John II of France granted the French Duchy of Burgundy to his youngest son, Philip the Bold in 1363.

On the whole, Charles is not a good name for a European ruler:

If only Charles the Bold could have hung on for another 500 years, his thoroughly modern duchy could have taken its place as a member state of the EU. So near and yet so far!

True enough, but the current one doesn't rule.

I believe he does in fact rule, but only the golden carriage, and only when the Firm lets him take it for a ride.

My brother got in trouble in high school after he had the temerity to correct his history teacher . . . who was telling the class that the Tudor dynasty was Egyptian and c. 1500 BCE.

                  This isn’t Elon Musk.

It’s Charles the Bold, whose cruelty, petulance and arrogance destroyed the Duchy of Burgundy.

They were bang up to date, though. They were early adopters of guns, and they had clocks. Philip the Good captured Joan of Arc and handed her over to his English allies, who put on a show trial and burned her alive. He also had by far the richest Court in Europe, and rather a lot of mistresses.
