  • The declining life expectancies in the US

A concerning split among predominately red and blue states.
For the most part experience is making the same mistakes over and over again, only with greater confidence.

Today’s news had a piece about Washington hospitals closing down their maternity clinics and neonatal units. They’re expensive and require special training. Seems that keeping them open eats into profit.

It's obesity and diabetes. Let's get real.

Yes, another example of the escalating dysfunction and division... driven mostly by income/wealth disparities. And the more a locale supports the party that embraces policies furthering those disparites... the worse it is.

I agree about this, kind of, but obesity and diabetes are basically symptoms of poverty, Ted.

Yes, it might be possible to eat well when you are poor. But eat well when you live in an urban environment and are poor? Much much harder. Food deserts. Working multiple jobs = less time cook, garden, etc. Easy availability of crap processed foods makes good choices harder. Misinformation (like the "food pyramid" guidelines" that push insulin-resistance-promoting carbs) makes it even harder yet.

Even so, a fat rich white diabetic will live longer, on average, than a fat poor Black diabetic because of (among other things) lack of access to quality health care.

For governments facing pension and health expectancies 67 is cheaper than 87………….. just sayin…………
And it's not just life expectancies that are declining….

"Nationwide, on average, 79% of U.S. adults are literate in 2023.

                    • 54% of adults have a literacy below 6th grade level.
                    • Low levels of literacy costs the US up to 2.2 trillion per year.
                    • 34% of adults who lack proficiency in literacy were born outside the US.
                    • Massachusetts was the state with the highest rate of childliteracy.
                    • New Mexico was the state with the lowest child literacy rate.
                    • The state with the highest percentage of adults who were considered literate was New Hampshire.

The numbers are skewed due to the high level of immigration. The decreases in literacy are directly related to new rivals who came here after 1980. There are approximately 100 million foreign born immigrants living in the United States as of 2022. Literacy of English is low because all the non native English speakers, many with little education.

the Center for Immigration Studies states that 41 percent of immigrant adults score at or below the lowest level of English literacy, and 28 percent of said immigrants have not completed high school – further placing a limit on higher education and language acquisition and employment, as well as increasing probability of poverty. The U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics released a study in 2013, which contained data gathered from the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). The study questioned proficiency in adult literacy, problem solving, and numeracy. The study revealed that people born in America, after 1980, scored lower than 15 of the 22 participating countries. Sadly, Americans between 15 and 65 years of age scored below the international average in all three previous mentioned categories. Additional studies confirm poor literacy rates in America and the perpetuation of poverty and poor socio-economic status.

In Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, and North Dakota (all red states) the greatest decline is on the tribal reservations.
