Re: Finally relocated all my squirrels

    Squirrels you say?

There were five houses of religion in a small town:
    The Presbyterian Church,
    The Baptist Church,
    The Methodist Church,
    The Catholic Church and
    The Jewish Synagogue.

Each church and Synagogue was overrun with pesky squirrels. One day, the Presbyterian Church called a meeting to decide what to do about the squirrels. After much prayer and consideration they determined that the squirrels were predestined to be there and they shouldn't interfere with God's divine will.In The Baptist Church the squirrels had taken up habitation in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a cover on the baptistery and drown the squirrels in it. The squirrels escaped somehow and there were twice as many there the next week .The Methodist Church got together and decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God's creation. So, they humanely trapped the Squirrels and set them free a few miles outside of town. Three days later, the squirrels were back.
But the Catholic Church came up with the best and most effective solution. They baptized the squirrels and registered them as members of the church.
Now they only see them on Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday and Easter. Not much was heard about the Jewish SynagogueThey took one squirrel and had a short service with him called circumcision and they haven't seen a squirrel on the property since.

Re: Finally relocated all my squirrels

I have some determined squirrels in my yard. They managed to defeat a cone shield on the post holding the feeder. But my current solution has worked undefeated for over a year. Simple, and entertaining to watch the squirrels try to get past it.

I attached a kid's slinky toy to the top bar with zip ties. The bottom of the slinky hangs loose around the post. When a squirrel tries to climb up the post, they encounter the free swinging slinky, attempt to grab on to it and then get launched into the air by the springy slinky.

Re: Finally relocated all my squirrels

I hung my feeder on plastic coated picture wire six feet down a maple branch, five feet from the trunk and ground. I would see squirrels on the branch, pondering logistics and giving up.

Squirrels were stealing my bird seed so I solved the problem with mechanical engineering :)Here is an explanation of the illusion dish thing!- https://demos....

Mark Rober has a great video (link above) on a maze he created, to find out how determined & skillful Squirrels can be when trying to get food.

We hung some lights from the branches of a tree in our back yard and the squirrels kept gnawing through the cord. I eventually used swaged stainless braided cable to hang from each branch, which works fine.

He shot a couple dozen but about another 200 showed up for the funeral.
I have known people to eat pigeons.I've never been desperate enough to even consider the idea.I have also known of a maggot breeder who found them useful for his business.

I've heard plenty of depression era stories . One that always stuck from a workmate talking about his grandparents, was setting the nets in the oak tree, seeding the ground and catching the sparrows.

Therapy is what I do for my squirrels....
                  Hot lead therapy.
I tried the electric chair bird feeder thing.... It just annoyed them enough to destroy the whole thing instead of just stealing the food.
And they are vindictive little bastards. They will destroy anything they can't eat if they don't get to eat easy food. Wiring, roofing, insulation, siding..... ANYTHING.

Squirrels- chicken of the trees. When I was a kid, my buddy and I would hunt them, and his mother knew what to do with a bag o' squirrels. She made Brunswick stew, and it was delicious. We have lots of squirrels around here, but it's a lot of work to get 'em ready for the stew pot, and I ain't that desperate... yet.

                      stew is good
                      as is squirrel and dumplings
Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

Pigeon is very good, as long as it it corn fed, oat fed, or sunflower seeds, or any where there is good feed for it. Dark meat like a Grouse, not gamey, texture like a Snow Goose. The flying rats that occupy our cities are what they eat.
