  • Alternatives to MS Office 365

My Office 365 crashed for the last time that I'll let it. What alternatives are you guys using for documents? Free is best, stable is extremely desirable! I prefer to use a non-web based system 'cause I'm a dinosaur, but will use Googledocs or the like if I have no alternative.

If you have a Mac... Apple Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are all included, gratis. Keynote in particular is miles better than Powerpoint.

Google is handy cause everything is in the cloud. Open any random computer and off you go.
Mucho clunky if yer used to using MSO in a reasonably advanced way.

I've never had MSO crash. You sure it's not your hardware?

Open Office / Libre Office is pretty good. I don't like the spreadsheet as well as Excel, but I use Excel a lot at work and I'm not really used to the free one. FWIW, I've never had trouble with excessive crashing of MSO either.

When they "improve" the software to the point it won't work unless you have a state-of-the-art system - it is time to dump the MS crap.

Re: Alternatives to MS Office 365

I had it crash several times. I'm running W-10 on an older HP. I finally gave up and dropped my subscription, so I'm looking for an alternative that's compatible with an older OS. Being a bit of a technophobe I tend to be about 75% down on the backside of the technology bell curve. At this point I'm seriously thinking about simply going back to my old typewriter

Thanks Guys! I loaded up Libre Office and so far I'm happy with it. The acid test will be when I have to share data with others

Make sure you save work as legacy MS Office files: .doc, .xls, etc. Chances are you won't be able to use the latest version, but your recipients will be able to use the files. If this is a collaborative thing, and the files will be sent back to you, make sure they know to save them in the original file format, because you may not be able to read them if their software "improves" them to the most recent version.

                          Oh.

This is where life can get weird.

When I was a lad and dinosaurs roamed the earth, a complicated document might have two different alignment types, three paragraphs and an image, it would fit on one sheet of paper.

Nowadays you can have background images, embedded spreadsheets, active tables which are not spreadsheets and tex in Arabic,Chinese an English all in the same seven hundred page document....

For collaborative work it would be, at the very least, - polite to warn the others and send round a test document for everyone to try, it may look like a game of Chinese whispers by the time you get it back.

Send three and fourpence, we're going to a dance.

Swmbo does a lot of collaborative work with large documents and holds Google docs in high regard, unless you suffer from Mac users.

There's no alternative for Office where I sit. I'm collaborating on documents with others... and we've never had crashes. I'm new to SharePoint, but for the current projects, its where we are at.
