  • The Village People - Modern Day Thought Experiment

I’m pretty sure the age demographics here remembers The Village People. I’ll be honest I wasn’t a fan but the soundtrack is part of my youth and a million weddings I attended inevitable would play YMCA or In the Navy.

Suffice to say, they had a moment and I’m sure some of you already have a Village People music worm running through your mind now. They were fun, campy, and quintessentially emblematic of the gay male culture of the time. I mean come on they called themselves The Village People in an era of Stonewall, and the West Village of NYC gay culture. The debut album Village People, which targeted disco's large gay audience. The group's name refers to Manhattan's Greenwich Village, with its reputation as a gay neighborhood. The characters were a symbolic group of American masculinity[3] and macho gay-fantasy personas.

None of that mattered in the 70’s & 80’s people just wanted to get their boggie down an disco the night away, or maybe we were just more accepting and tolerant.

Flash forward to present day anti wokeness, anti LGBTQ+ and basic culture wars we are now dealing with.
So my thought experiment is what do you think would happen if the Village People phenomenon were to happen in todays divisive American society ? Would they be banned in Texas, Florida and every other MAGA Red state ? Would they be burning or AR15 shooting photos and albums or worse attending a concert and mass shooting the concert goers because it promotes homosexuality.

This time reminders me of the Dark Ages when we went from Michelangelo and Leonardo ( both suspected to be gay ) to one Dimensional ultra religious, ultra conservative step backwards in art, culture, science etc.

Harry Styles is currently the biggest pop music star on the planet; I think he and his images reflects the mood and acceptance of his audience. Fluid gender sells. The LGBQT+ genie has left the bottle.

Without friends none of this is possible.

I think that there ought to be vastly "out" Village People tribute bands doing tailgates at every single GOP rally going forwards, with the performers wearing Trump masks in addition to their 1970s-80s gay culture costumes. Paid for by Democrats, with royalties paid to the Village People and their management.

There's no arguing that Donald isn't a huge fan, "dancing" to YMCA at every rally, and even hiring a scab tribute performer group at Mar a Lago recently.

What's the difference, one asks, between these MAGA-base icons and Drag Queens?

        .
Trump was caught on video a few days ago at Mar-a-Lago "dancing" by the pool to a rendition of "Macho Man" being performed by a Village People cover group. He was subsequently hit with a cease-and-desist order.

Village People send Trump cease-and-desist over ‘Macho Man’ use at Mar-a-Lago

BY SARAH POLUS - 05/16/23 1:47 PM ET

Famed musical group the Village People has sent former President Trump a cease-and-desist letter over his usage of their hit song “Macho Man.”

Karen Willis, the band’s manager and wife of lead singer Victor Willis, sent Trump’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, the letter on Monday, calling into question a recent performance at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

A cover band’s recent performance of the group’s song at Trump’s Florida resort caused “confusion,” as many believed the imitation group was the actual band, Willis argued in the letter.

Willis also took issue with the cover band dressing similarly to the Village People, saying, “the use of the group’s image and likeness at Mar-a-Lago was unauthorized,” and a trademark violation.

The Village People have spoken out about Trump’s usage of their music before, notably in 2020 when they penned a Facebook post saying he had been “respectful in his use of our songs and has not crossed the line.”

Monday’s letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Hill, sang a different tune.

“Though my husband has tolerated your client’s use of his Village People music, we cannot allow such use by him to cause public confusion as to endorsement,” the letter reads.

The missive stipulates that Trump must cease use of the group’s image, likeness and music in his campaign or personal use.

In response to the letter, Tacopina told TMZ he would “only deal with the attorney of the Village People, if they have one, not the wife of one of the members.”

He added, “But they should be thankful that President Trump allowed them to get their name back in the press. I haven’t heard their name in decades. Glad to hear they are still around.”

The Hill has reached out to Tacopina for further comment.

I don't know how well the Village People do from royalties, but I do have an idea of how they might boost it a bit. Some of you may be aware of the dodgy dealings that went on to deprive Bruce Kirby of the income from his Laser design.Which led to the boat being re-named the Kirby Torch and as far as the IOC are concerned it has become the ILCA.Do you think its fun to sail in an I...L...C...A?A quick remix and it ought to be played at every Olympic classes regatta
