Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

      C'mon, man.
Not everyone needs a Ram 3500 diesel dually to fetch a bag of mulch from the local big box.

Isuzu used as a fleet wagon a lot in Sweden.

Of course, having only a 1.9 litre diesel with only 163hp, no self respecting American would be seen dead in anything that can top 33mpg, when their sole existence to living is to consume hydrocarbons and make others rich, generally speaking.

I've got a SUV for the mulch. A compact pickup with a small bed would add a lot of hauling options. Stuff like my snowblower, bandsaw, rocking chair, are all darn difficult to get into my Subaru.

You can drive a toyota Yaris 1.3 and still tow 900kg/ 1980lbs

                  This was my solution also.
I owned a pick-up truck for my business but did not need that gas-guzzler all the time when retired.
I now have a Jeep Cherokee 4X4 and a utility trailer for the odd times I need to haul something.
                  Works like a charm.

This is my current hauler. Twelve years old and 17K miles. It doesn't get used much, gets terrible mileage, rear wheel drive. A compact pickup AWD is in my near future. I might add a small utility trailer.

You're joking, right? Much the same size as the original Toyota pickups. 210HP (gas) which makes it more powerful than the Toyotas by far. It'd better fit the actual needs of probably 75% of the people driving US 1/2 tons. Not macho enough for sure - but far more sensible.

Here's a a genuine Citroen-built one. They were only built in the Slough (UK) plant.

Just like most pickups sold in North America.

I love all those little beasties. And I were a suburban or urban homeowner... they'd be peachy. But for a professional that regularly hauls 4X8 sheets of plywood, and long lengths of lumber, often in loads that range from 1/2 to 1 ton... and who camps/sleeps in the back... they'd be nothing more than a cruel tease.

Peugeot has a long history of pickups. The 404 was a good one & actually made by PushAndGo - not a rebranded Chinese truck:
