Re: The rich are different from us!
Decades ago, a parishioner in our church asked if he could put his Bosendorfer grand piano on the stage of our parish hall. It did not fit in the retirement condo he moved into. In return for the church using it, he just asked that he have access to it and that we keep it tuned. He is now long dead, we have lost contact with his family and the church is now unsure just who owns it. But there is sits, a beautiful instrument.I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

Re: The rich are different from us!
Decades ago, a good friend had a Triumph Spitfire. He went to work as a marketing guy for his older brothers’ prefab house building company. He thought it would be a good idea to photograph his Spitfire sitting atop one of the houses to show off the construction strength. The crane strap broke and his new Spitfire went down through the roof of the new house. True story.Last edited by ron ll; 05-12-2023, 08:13 PM.Comment

Ah, it looks as if there is some room to drive the car in the penthouse. Knew a guy once who drove his motorbike in the attic when he did not have a driving licence any more ... So yes, a bit of driving should be possible.Comment

Conspicuous consumption.
Back in the 7th century Suffolk, while you lived in a smokey old shack, and held your rough woolen cloak together with a handmade iron pin, your king bedazzled you with this clasp, performing exactly the same function:

Re: The rich are different from us!
A local doctor whose other house in Sydney I was invited to visit several times years ago, shared a very steep driveway with another feller. The doctor turned right at the top of the hill and parked in front of his house. The other feller turned left into a garage with a circular rotating floor. Drive in head first, turn the floor and drive out again. In his case though there really wasn't another viable option- and it was coolJayInOz

Re: The rich are different from us!
What are we looking at there, Dave? My aircraft ID skills have dropped considerably since my teens, when we would sit in the school library and identify aircraft from photos in books about WW2, and flying magazines the school subscribed to. (Where we looked at classifieds ads in the back, and dreamed about the Spitfires on sale for $75,000!)
I am pretty sure about the Harvard front left. Is the Y2XXX a clipped-wing Spit? Lysander back left? And another Spitfire between the Harvard and the Y2XXX machine?Comment

Re: The rich are different from us!
Yes, in the foreground is my wife's RV6a. The yellow machine is a Harvard Mk IV. On the right is a Mustang IV (essentially a P-51D).
In the middle distance is a Mk IX Spitfire -- not clipped. Beyond the Harvard is a Lysander IIIa. And back-right is a DHC-2 Beaver on amphibs.
I just got back from there -- flew the Harvard, Spitfire, and Mustang.

Re: The rich are different from us!
Big auction of cars in Italy an Switzerland just coming up. Lots of Porsches with some others. Word is. That too many at one time, so will depress prices.
More drift..
I knew Billy Mitchel's daughter. She had a bunch of Chinese art from the Boxer rebellion era. Due to US laws she could not take it back to US. Since I was off to UK, I carried a couple of Court Portrates from the era to show to a London auction house. The Asian expert really liked them and asked if I could get together a few for an upcoming auction. When I told her I had 80, she freaked out and said that putting that number in one auction would ruin the market.
Will be interesting to see what happens with the Carrera sale.Comment
