Anybody know anything about plumbing ?
I am replacing my old kitchen faucet. The new faucet has the attached braided type of hot and cold water supply lines that have the female fitting that attaches to the male fitting at the supply cut off valve. Inside the female fitting are little rubber o rings. My question is - is it necessary to wrap the male fittings with teflon tape to prevent leaks or will leaks be prevented by the compression of the little rubber o rings ?Tags: None -

so you forgot the 35cent roll of teflon tape while you were at the hardware store?
no it's not necessarySimpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool. -

Re: Anybody know anything about plumbing ?
it's rare that I reuse "O" rings...replacing with new is easy n cheap..... new or old, "refresh" with a lite coating of Silicon Grease prior to reasemblyLast edited by the_gr8t_waldo; 03-18-2023, 10:14 AM.Comment

Re: Anybody know anything about plumbing ?
I'm in the "can't hurt might help" camp so use both dope on the female threads and tape on the male side, especially on those slip joint p-trap assemblies where the gasket is supposed to prevent leaks but often doesn't. There's nothing more disheartening than finishing a plumbing job and then having to tear everything apart to fix a leak.Comment

Re: Anybody know anything about plumbing ?
tape and dope do nada for that type of fitting. if your compression washer fails the water leaks through the top of the nut where the tube passes through, not the threads.Comment

Re: Anybody know anything about plumbing ?
I agree on compression washers. On slip joint fittings, I wrap the SJ washer with teflon tape before assembly. It seems to help.Comment

Re: Anybody know anything about plumbing ?
"Gasket sealed" joints require no "sealant" (teflon tape does behave as a thread lubricant, I prefer Epifanes oil based varnish or any old oil paint, for that sort of work, and avoid tape like the plague)
Lee is correct, tape won't do anything in that application.Comment
