i cannot remember a time when the f1 races were broadcast live on public tv in the united states, other than monaco and the us gp at watkins glen

the most memorable era of broadcasting to me when i was younger was when the entire season of f1 races were broadcast here in the united states on the original pre-nascarization version of the speed channel (cable network), they were recorded live and 'and were hosted by bob varsha and david hobbs, who were an excellent motorsports announcing team, then they were broadcast here in the states at noon or thereabouts on sundays - this was pre-internet and it was easy to stay away from spoilers

varsha and hobbs remained an announcing team here for f1 and lemans and daytona until just a few years ago when f1 broadcasting went full on streaming

i find the current app glitchy but convenient

Given that the USA has only been able to breed one world champion, and that back in 1961, I guess that's understandable.

We were fortunate enough to have bred Black Jack (3 titles) and then, when Alan Jones came along and started winning, the local TV moguls took an interest in the late 70's... and were rewarded to see him win in 1980.

Plenty of other Aussie F1 drivers kept the interest up... even if it was midnight TV and we were rewarded with live coverage, even if the races saw us nodding off in our recliners.

It got even better with Grand Prix bike racing... we had a continual stream of performing riders, including one of the best ever in Doohan. AND... no-one ever went to sleep during a bike GP.

Its a PITA to have to rely on streaming... as we do in Thailand. I paid for the F1 for one year... but couldn't attract a crowd. We had a loyal group of followers in last night for the bike GPs... and I won another beer

the thing that bothers me more about miami is the post race events are interrupted by the driver to victory circle

i have to admit the verstappen performance including pitting for soft tires and setting the fastest lap on the last lap of the gp was pretty crazy
